South Korea's appeal for the short track speed skating men's 1000m race, the International Skating Federation rejected: the penalty is well founded

[Global Times special correspondent in South Korea Li Hao] The appeal of the South Korean and Hungarian short track speed skating teams against the penalty for the short track speed skating men's 1000 meters competition at the Beijing Winter Olympics has attracted widespread attention in recent days. South Korean organizations held a press conference on the 8th, saying that they would meet with IOC President Bach and resort to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, they also said they would continue to challenge the medals.

The complaint was dismissed by ISU

At a press conference held by the Korean Sports Association on the 8th, Yoon Hong-geun, president of the Korea Ice Federation and head of the sports delegation, expressed "strong dissatisfaction" with the cancellation of results in the men's 1000-meter short track speed skating semifinals held on the evening of the 7th, and has decided to meet with IOC President Bach to protest the "unfair punishment" of South Korean short track speed skaters on the 7th. Yin Honggen said the Sports Association would take all feasible measures to take "unfair penalties" to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport in accordance with the relevant procedures.

It is reported that the South Korean delegation has filed a written complaint with the International Skating Union (ISU) and the International Olympic Committee. The International Skating Federation issued a statement on the 7th Swiss time, saying that it received complaints from the South Korean team and the Hungarian team, but the referee and the video referee repeatedly verified and upheld the original judgment.

The new rules bring more penalties

For the South Korean side to appeal to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, Wang Dazhao, a senior reporter of the People's Daily, told the Global Times reporter on the 8th that this should be of little use. Regardless of the sport, the general principle is basically the same, that is, if there is any penalty that is not acceptable, an appeal should be submitted within a certain period of time after the end of the game. Arbitral institutions generally look at whether there are procedural errors, and if not, the matter ends here. Because whether the judgment is fair or not is not within the jurisdiction of the arbitration. No arbitration institution has been able to produce conclusive evidence in a short period of time, rule that the penalty is invalid, and demand correction. Some organizations later confirmed through investigations that there had been improper penalties, and the heaviest punishment was also disqualification from referee law enforcement, but the penalties that had already been imposed could not be changed.

In recent years, the International Skating Federation has issued new regulations, which have made stricter and clearer provisions on cross-cutting, crossing the line and dangerous actions that occur in short-track speed skating. The multiple penalties for the short track speed skating competition on the night of February 7 were also based on the referee's understanding of the new rules. For example, the yellow card for Hungarian liu Shaolin was explained by the International Skating Federation to be related to "causing contact in the straight lane from the inside to the outside" and "blocking with the arm at the finish line".

Continuing the game is the best option

Hungarian media "Hungary Today" said on the 7th that for Liu Shaolin, it is certainly disappointing to be cancelled, but for his brother Liu Shaoang, this means winning a second bronze medal in Beijing. He previously won the bronze medal in the short track speed skating mixed team relay. It was also the first time since 1924 that the Hungarian delegation had won more than one medal in a Winter Olympic event.

For the South Korean team, the game still has to continue. According to Yonhap News Agency reported on the 8th, for some South Korean netizens and politicians to ask for the withdrawal of the South Korean delegation to express protest, Yin Honggen said that this is not the best plan, "there are many events, our best choice now is to do everything we can to help athletes compete, I hope fans can continue to support us." Yonhap News Agency said that the members of the South Korean short track speed skating team have not wavered and will continue to challenge the medal.
