PCIe 4.0 is perfectly adequate pcIe 5.0 solid state or 2024 launch

Intel's 12th Generation Core already supports PCIe 5.0, but it is still difficult to see PCIe 5.0 consumer products in recent years, Wallace Kou, CEO of Silicon Motion of The world's largest NAND Flash supplier, said: "Since Intel and AMD continue to introduce new CPU upgrades with PCIe 4.0 to the market, PCIe 4.0 is likely to last for several years. We're ready to continue rolling out our third-generation PCIe Gen4 controller next year and then transition to PCIe 5.0 in 2024. ”

This is obviously related not only to development time, but also to the cost of recycling the previous generation of PCIe 4.0 SSD controllers before launching a new product. Silicon Motion is developing multiple PCIe 5.0 SSD controllers and is expected to launch the audiophile SM2508 by the end of the year, which will compete with Phison's PS5026-E26 and InnoGrit's IG5666 controllers, as well as undeclared internal controllers such as Samsung.

Silicon Motion's mainstream PCIe 5.0 controller, said to be the SM2507, may be better suited for mobile applications due to lower power consumption. However, Silicon Motion's first PCIe 5.0 controller should be the SM8366 enterprise controller released last year, with shipments expected in the second half of this year. For most users, PCIe 5.0 SSDs are unlikely to have a huge impact unless we see some significant improvements in random read and write performance, as this is the real bottleneck for SSDs today.
