What are the deaths from NASOPHARY worldwide?

Globally, about 50,000 people die from NASOPHARY each year, and the mortality rate in economically underdeveloped countries or regions is 4.5 times that of developed countries.

Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei are the five countries with the highest rates of NASOPHARY mortality[1].

Mortality in both men and women with NASOPharyngeal cancer begins to rise rapidly after the age of 40, with the highest mortality rates being in patients over 75 years of age.

First, the death data of nasopharyngeal cancer in mainland China

According to global nasopharyngeal cancer detection data released by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the incidence and mortality rate of nasopharyngeal cancer in mainland China are higher than the world average.

Statistics from the National Cancer Center of China show that the estimated number of NASOPHARY deaths in 2015 was 34,100 [2]. The 5-year relative survival rate is only 43.8 percent [3], with more than half of patients not surviving more than 5 years.

However, the death of nasopharyngeal carcinoma is also related to the specific stage of cancer, stage I nasopharyngeal carcinoma is still in the early stage, the 5-year survival rate is more than 95%; the 5-year survival rate of stage II nasopharyngeal carcinoma is about 87%, but the 5-year survival rate of patients with stage III and IV nasopharyngeal cancer will drop sharply to about 30%.

A detailed analysis of the death data from nasopharyngeal cancer in mainland China shows that the mortality rate is significantly higher in men than in women and slightly higher in urban areas than in rural areas. The mortality rate in South China is higher than in other regions, with the lowest [3].

The three provinces with the highest mortality rates are Guangxi, Guangdong and Hainan.

In terms of age groups, in people aged 35 to 39 years, the mortality rate of NASOPharyngeal cancer began to rise rapidly, peaking at the age of 80 to 84 years for men and peaking for women over the age of 85 years.

Therefore, the risk of death in elderly patients with nasopharyngeal cancer is relatively high.
