Danish scientists studied more than 8,500 primary cases of COVID-19, more than 2,100 of which were variants of BA.2 Omikron.
Of the 18,000 people exposed to the virus, 5,700 were infected within a week. The probability of infection in BA.2 (39%) is higher than that in BA.1 (29%). This means that the variant virus, which already dominates in Denmark, increases the average risk of infection by 33 percent.
"BA.2 is more susceptible to infecting individuals who have not been vaccinated, vaccinated, or even given booster injections," the study's authors said, but have not yet been reviewed. Regardless of age, gender, or vaccination status, BA.2 is more contagious.
Studies have found that BA.2 makes unvaccinated people more contagious. However, those who have been vaccinated are equally contagious to BA.1 or others in BA.2. The researchers believe this may be because in unvaccinated populations, the BA.2-induced viral load was even higher than the original omicron.
Moreover, the ability of the two different omicrons to evade antibodies is similar, although a UK study last week showed that BA.2 proficiency was slightly lower than BA.1.
Both the HEALTHSA study and the new study from the Serum Institute, which oversees COVID statistics in Denmark, agree that BA.2 has some advantage over BA.1 in terms of transmission. The statement reflects what the data from both countries show shows that the new subfamily has made progress on the basis of the original. However, the reason for this advantage is unclear.
In Madrid, the new Terrace Decree will come into force on Tuesday. At that time, all dining venues that have expanded on the sidewalks due to COVID-19 assistance will be restored to their original state.
