Recently, a startup called Volterio has developed a "fully automatic charging robot" that combines the convenience of a wireless charger with the speed of a wired connection.
The idea is very simple, and the charging solution consists of an outlet mounted under the car and a charging robot mounted on the floor of the garage. The owner simply parks the car on the charger and the two parts automatically connect and start charging.
The two components can automatically calibrate the position, and the charging robot can "correct the deviation of 30 centimeters (11.8 inches) from the ideal parking position." It doesn't matter if you park your car at one angle, because "the conical design of the physical connector between the floor and the vehicle allows for both positioning and calibration." "Therefore, within a certain range, the driver can stop at will.
The charging solution will initially be home-oriented and will be able to provide 22 kilowatts of electricity. In addition, the charging unit can simply be placed on the floor of the garage, while the socket can be installed on an existing electric vehicle.
In addition, the new product will provide fast charging solutions for parking lots, charging stations and operating fleet workplaces. This version of the charging robot has a similar structure, but the charging power can reach 50 kilowatts.
The charging robot is more than just a concept, Volterio has already put it into production in partnership with Continental Engineering Services. The quasi-production version will be ready in mid-year and mass production is planned to begin in 2024.
