Before today, Johnson had already taken three short 10-day contracts with the Lakers and could not continue to sign such contracts. After much deliberation, the Lakers felt there was no way to trade Westbrook, Tucker Jr. or Nunn before the midseason trade deadline of the season, so they abandoned the trade and gave Johnson the 15th and final guaranteed contract in the lineup.
It is understood that Johnson signed a two-year contract, and next season is the team option. The Lakers wanted to maintain the flexibility of the lineup and liked Johnson's defensive enthusiasm, so the two sides hit it off.
Johnson is 198 cm tall and has excellent running and jumping ability, which is a very good choice for the Lakers. If he can continue to perform well, Johnson will at least be a good trading chip.
