In the early Days of January 1940, one of the largest circulation film magazines in Shanghai, Qingqing Film, had launched a vote among film fans for the "1939 Fan Favorite Movie Star", and the final result was that Liu Qiong, the male film star with the most votes. In the 1940s, he was also known as the "Five Emperor Superstars" of the Chinese film industry along with Jin Yan, Zhao Dan, Comfort and Tao Jin.

Born in 1912, Liu Qiong is a native of Xiangyin, Hunan, whose original name was Liu Boyao. He studied at the Shanghai Law School and would have become a judge or a lawyer in the future, but he loves movies and sports.

The famous actor Jin Yan also likes sports, often going to Liu Qiong's school to play basketball, one after another, the two are familiar. Jin Yan saw that he had a standard Chinese, a handsome image, a quick movement when playing balls, and a graceful posture, and he felt that he was suitable for being an actor.

In 1948, Liu Qiong went to Hong Kong to make films, and in 1952, she returned to Shanghai and became a member of the Shanghai Film Studio.
