Recently, "Freehand Rock Climbing", which won the Best Documentary Award at the 91st Academy Film Festival, was unveiled in the "Beijing Film Festival" section of the Beijing International Film Festival and received unanimous praise from professional film critics and audiences. The film was co-directed by Kim Kwok-wai and Elizabeth Chai Vassarely. Director Kwok Wai Kim is a cinematographer and filmmaker for National Geographic magazine, as well as a well-known mountaineer who has climbed many rock walls with the film's protagonist Alex over the past decade.

Due to the technical safety needs of rock climbing, it needs to be carried out during the day when the weather is dry and the light is sufficient, so the light will be very stiff, especially for the white and yellow granite rock walls such as "Chieftain Rock", which is very easy to cause the rock wall highlight to be extremely bright, and the shadow part is extremely dark. In addition, due to the extreme environment of the outdoors, it is often impossible to change the light ratio by additional fill light, which increases the difficulty of film shooting. In this regard, Canon's Canon Log 2 gamma mode has 15 levels of tolerance, which effectively reduces the occurrence of overexposure or underexposure, thereby preserving more detail for the picture, and preserving the details of the high glossy surface and background shadow surface of the rock wall to the greatest extent during rock wall shooting, and retaining sufficient color grading space for the later stage of the image.
What's more, the EOS C300 Mark II can present a tense 4K cinematic image picture, which is equipped with a Super 35mm CMOS image sensor of about 8.85 million effective pixels, and a high-speed image processing platform with excellent processing power, the Dual DIGIC DV 5, which is also more detailed and rich in detail, such as recording the hand details of Alex's freehand climbing, which can well capture the texture of the rock wall and the texture of the fingers. When shooting, controlled exposure is generally adjusted by aperture, shutter, and ISO. In the past, in film and television shooting, the external ND filter used needed to be replaced manually, but in this extreme environment of rock wall shooting, it was almost impossible to replace the ND filter smoothly, and carrying more counterweights would also increase the difficulty of shooting and the safety factor of shooting. The EOS C300 Mark II's built-in ND filter helps camera crews quickly adjust exposures, even when it's bright outdoors, shooting at a wide aperture for a shallow depth of field to get the right exposure value.

When shooting life scenes, the crew opted for a Canon prime film lens, which resulted in a softer bokeh effect and a greater depth of field. The Canon CN20x50 IAS H/E1 film servo zoom lens also meets the needs of wide-angle to telephoto shooting, and the lens is used in the angle of shooting the rock wall from the ground, which is conducive to explaining the relationship between the protagonist and the environment.
