Say goodbye to 48 years of history: Volkswagen Passat officially discontinued production in the United States

IT Home January 26 news, from the drive report, the current US car market has a clear trend, that is, we know the car is gradually "dead", American consumers are obviously more inclined to SUVs and pickups.

Recently, the last Passat in the United States rolled off the production line at the Chattanooga plant in Tennessee in December, which also means that the 48-year-old Passat in the US market has finally bid farewell to its own era.

The passat, which has a special meaning, is in platinum grey and has an aerial map of chattanooga's factory printed inside the cup holder.

Production of the Passat was originally scheduled to end in 2023, but due to declining sales, Volkswagen moved the time forward to December 2021.

Passat has a long and storied history in the United States, first entering the U.S. market in 1974, but before 1990, Passat was sold under the name "Dasher" and "Quantum", and it was not until 1990, with the launch of the third-generation model, that Passat took on its current name in the United States.

The first six generations of Passat were imported and sold from Europe until 2011, when the "special edition" Passat for the United States and China entered the market separately, which was larger than the European model and was significantly competitive in price with other mid-size cars sold in North America.

In 48 years, the Passat has sold more than 1.8 million vehicles in the United States, and for comparison, Volkswagen sells more Passats in the United States than Mazda sells Miatas worldwide. For another comparison, though, Honda has sold more than 1.9 million Civics in the U.S. in the last six years alone.

Following passat shutdown, the Chattanooga plant will shift to electric vehicles, which will begin production of ID.4 electric SUVs later this year. The plant will also serve as an electric vehicle test center for Volkswagen's North American business.

Although the sedan Passat was discontinued, the Passat Travel Edition, Arteon and Arteon Hunting Editions will continue to be produced. Passat, while not as exaggerated as the Volkswagen Golf, will remain an important part of North American automotive history.
