Boeing is investing $450 million in Wisk Aero to support the development of driverless air taxis

The U.S. Stock Research Agency has learned that according to Zhitong Financial News, the American Boeing Company (BA. US) said Monday it would inject another $450 million into Wisk Aero to support the development of the company's driverless air taxi.

California-based Wisk is founded by Boeing and Google (GOOG. US) co-founder Kitty Hawk, an aircraft company founded by co-founder Larry Page. The company is one of dozens of manufacturers of electric VTOL aircraft, but the difference is its focus on unmanned vehicles.

Marc Allen, Boeing's chief strategy officer, told the media: "We believe that the direct development of unmanned aerial vehicles is a major strategic advantage of Wisk, which allows the company to follow these principles at all levels of design and development." In addition, Boeing declined to give a specific date for the launch of its so-called sixth-generation Wisk flying taxi, but industry sources say the company expects it to submit certification around 2028. Boeing has said it will be the first U.S. unmanned aerial vehicle to be certified.

Wisk said in a statement that Boeing's $450 million investment would make it "one of the most well-funded" of its kind, but the company did not disclose more details. Some analysts say the timeline for getting certified remains the main uncertainty surrounding the industry.
