How many beautification apps do you have on your phone right now?

Every time I take a selfie, I can't help but indulge in the special effects of various beauty cameras. 🤳

I wonder if you will do the same?

And the artists' selfies are self-portraits, and we are now sending selfies in the circle of friends, it is inevitable that they will show off their beauty.

Today, we bring a self-portrait of an artist with a long face, small eyes, a garlic nose, and thick lips.

"Self-Portrait" Ban Tamara, 1949

Eh? This selfie doesn't seem to have a p-chart.

Who is she?

How can it be so confident to send the original picture

She was such a woman, she lost her father at the age of one, lost her mother at the age of eight, and was sold to the Qinglou by her uncle at the age of fourteen to sell her art, she escaped, committed suicide, and disfigured, but in exchange for more cruel beatings.

Until the age of 17, she met her confidant Pan Zanhua, who redeemed her and sent her to study in France.

Panzanization

Born again, she was the first Chinese painter whose works were collected by the Louvre, and even the French authorities stipulated that her paintings were not allowed to be taken out of the country. Zhang Daqian revered her, calling her a rare painter, saying that her paintings were in the "right vein for the Chinese painting!" ”

Xu Beihong said that she was one of only three painters in the Chinese art scene at that time, and even sent a special report praising her, saying that she had completed the achievements that in the reform of Chinese painting, men could not achieve.

Xu Beihong: "True art is declining, my way is weak, but I want to be inspired by others, and the scholar has nothing to gain, but to get the hero Lady Pan Yuliang."

She played a bad hand in her life into a king bomb.

She is the protagonist we are going to talk about today, pan Yuliang, a generation of painting souls.

I don't really want to talk about the tragic experiences of her life, but instead of paying too much attention to her gossip, let's take a moment to look at her paintings.

Her self-portraits, even now, are very inspiring for us contemporary women.

Yi Gongzi's "History of Western Art"

We have previously written about the significance of self-portraits for creators in the book "A History of Western Art". It is a sign that we are re-examining ourselves.

Although we will not be able to paint self-portraits of ourselves now, for many girls, maybe they take selfies every day, and maybe they often send selfies to the vibrato/circle of friends.

The selfies we send are actually our inner selves.

Pan Yuliang's self-portrait actually went through three stages.

"Self-Portrait" Ban Tamara, 1940

It was in 1940, after her second trip to France, that she painted a self-portrait. This is also recognized by everyone as the most beautiful of all Pan Yuliang's self-portraits.

You see, she is wearing a classic black cheongsam, with her right hand on the table and her left hand in front of her, posing in an elegant "S" posture with feminine charm, her eyebrows stretched, and her eyes a little confused.

If someone familiar with Pan Yuliang sees this painting, the first reaction must be, who is this?

Pan Yuliang in the process of creation

Because in reality, Pan Yuliang has nothing to do with elegance and beauty.

Friends who have interacted with Pan Yuliang say that she has a bold personality, speaks in a loud voice, can drink, can draw fists, and is informal. Closer, her husband Pan Zanhua simply said of her:

"You have been puzzled by (talking) about decoration all your life, and you are more masculine. Young men riding horses and archers are good at archery..."

Although the "Pan Yuliang" in the painting does not look like Pan Yuliang himself, do you feel a little familiar?

She is very much like some female selfies we have seen, very beautiful, very gentle and weak, but only allowing herself to live under the eyes of men.

I am not saying that this is not good, Pan Yuliang has lacked fatherly love since childhood, witnessed too many men and women in the Qinglou, she is used to worshiping the power of men, and she is accustomed to being watched by men, so that when she appears in the picture, she will also habitually think:

What kind of me do men like to look at?

So she tried to highlight her feminine characteristics, but it was obviously a self-portrait, your own examination of yourself, and Pan Yuliang at that time was like painting for others.

She wants to escape her former identity and perspective, but do you know how hard it is?

Once, because of her origin, when she was studying painting at the Shanghai Art College, a female classmate asked to withdraw from school with "vowing not to go to the same school as a prostitute", so that she had to quit school and go to France to study.

When she returned from her studies and became the head of her alma mater, she did not expect that some colleagues would insult her as a "pheasant" in person because of teaching trivia!

What is even more excessive is that at a domestic exhibition of Pan Yuliang's paintings, someone also posted a note to her painting "Manpower Heroes", which read:

"This is a prostitute's praise for a client!"

In 1945, Pan Yuliang was elected president of the Chinese Society for The Study of French Art and received the French National Gold Medal.

Her artistic achievements made her more and more confident to face these mockeries, so at this stage, her self-portrait became like this.

Self-Portrait in Red, Pan Yuliang, 1945

She no longer looked like a gentle girl. She raised her eyebrows, her eyes were no longer confused, and her movements were not as elegant and well-behaved as before, but with a sense of vigilance.

The vase that had been placed on the side was moved to the front of the body and the picture, and looking at her expression, it seemed that the next second she was going to smash the vase at those who were twittering at her.

Unlike the previous self-portraits, Pan Yuliang presented his most authentic appearance, with thick and powerful arms, a casual and natural standing posture, and even the neck lines were not spared, and they were also painted.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is painted in an enclosed indoor environment

Let's look behind Pan Yuliang again. As early as the European Renaissance, women were actually forbidden to appear in windows to show off.

Pan Yuliang opened the window behind her, breaking the situation of women in closed environments, including herself and regular female self-portraits.

It's a kind of rebellion against the tradition of suppressing the female body.

From the aesthetics of subordinate men to the self-expression of female subject consciousness, when Pan Yuliang no longer deliberately beautifies herself and is a weak woman in the eyes of others, at this time, "Pan Yuliang" really appears in front of us.

By the time of her 1963 self-portrait, she was becoming more and more free of herself.

Half-Naked Self-Portrait, Pan Yuliang, 1963

The vase was replaced with a wine glass and an ashtray, and the delicate cheongsam and dress were also replaced by coats and cotton pants with Chinese elements.

Looking at her sitting posture again, one hand supporting her head and the other supporting the right leg of the chair, it is completely different from the previous pose. Even more boldly, she opened her clothes directly, exposing her breasts.

In our impression, it seems that all men will be naked and drink like this. However, it is such a "depraved" work that Pan Yuliang reveals the only smile in all her self-portraits.

She smiled until her teeth were exposed, and she smiled until her eyes were bent, very free, very relaxed.

Details of "Half-Naked Self-Portrait" Pan Yuliang

This time, she stopped looking at anyone, and she didn't care about anyone's gaze. This time, she painted for herself, telling everyone who I was and what my "Pan Yuliang" really looked like.

From the first painting: I want to be the perfect person in your eyes.

To the second painting: I am not the kind of person you see.

To the third painting: I am what I am, and I don't care what you think of me.

In his self-portrait, Pan Yuliang completed three times of self-examination and crossed the steps of life three times.

We have a lot of selfies today, and we have a lot of tools that help us beautify ourselves.

On social media platforms, we also receive a lot of different eyes, different feedback.

It is said that women are pleasing to themselves.

There's nothing wrong with that. But in the world of art, there are many beautiful bodies.

And the truth, however, is very rare.

All great artists seek to return to their true selves.

Because reality is really for life, it has infinite power.
