Xing Zhanyi has a prominent feature, that is, he is good at applying his unique artistic sensitivity rich in literati temperament to the creation of seal carving and calligraphy.
I have always believed that Xing Zhanyi is a kind of seal engraver who has transcended himself, and he has a strange endowment that is detached from his own time, which should be closely related to his artist biography. Xing Zhanyi's grandfather was the older generation of painters in Shenyang, Xing Dongchuan, who was well-known in the 1950s and 1960s. Xing Zhanyi is completely maverick in pursuit of his own artistic imagination. The penetrating and powerful nature of Xing Zhanyi's imagination came from the mirror of his mind. What is the Mirror of the Mind? I think that in his dealings with Xing Zhanyi, he has an authenticity of life, in which he can see a kind of charm and vitality, and in him there is an invisible spiritual temperament, which makes his artistic creation have obvious improvisational characteristics, thus forming a self-indulgent and frank artistic personality, and this mirror of the soul ultimately provides the foundation and support for his seal carving and calligraphy style. Xing Zhanyi's seal carvings and calligraphy are distinct and unique.
Xing Zhanyi's seal carving originated from HanYin and Wu Changshuo, and belonged to the strong and simple road. Xing Zhanyi pays attention to the design and arrangement of seal engraving, flexion and extension, interspersed, virtual reality, echo and other aspects, forming a complete whole. Xing Zhan sometimes prints a knife at a time, cutting through the iron, refreshing and smooth, clean and neat, some are carved straight into a single knife, strong and powerful, the lines appear clumsy and simple, naturally old. Some prints take the French and Chinese seals, emphasizing the dense contrast and the change of curvature. Xing Zhanyi pursued the Huangtu Ling Seal Style, and he had gained a lot from in-depth study of the Huang Mufu School of Seal Style. Huang Shiling was a literati artist in the late Qing Dynasty, his seal engraving works show the elegant literati meaning, Xing Zhanyi pursued the spirit of ancient seals, the relics of the gods, overwhelmed, through careful observation of the ancient seals and the predecessors how to show the thick, simple, reckless, majestic, virtual to cast the "self" seal carving language, that is, through the "intention to take" to "take" their own seal carving.
Xing Zhanyi's calligraphy, like his seal carvings, was developed from learning on the basis of tradition. Xing Zhanyi studied the Cao Quan Stele, the Yi Ying Stele, the Shi Men Song, and the Zhang Qian Stele. Xing Zhanyi's main work "Ode to the Stone Gate", learning the opening of the "Ode to the Stone Gate", the strength is very subtle, the knot is dense, the oblique is straight, and the fun of opening and closing is interesting. Therefore, from Xing Zhanyi's calligraphy, it can be seen that his life mood is projected into the calligraphy creation, and the center is used at the same time, and the expression of denseness, oblique alignment, and opening and closing is vivid. Xing Zhanyi's calligraphy shows the state of his soul and reflects his artistic personality and self-worth. If we are to find a spiritual quality that the ancients had in common with Xing Zhanyi's pottery, then this quality may be called "Qing". "Qing" is a quality away from dust achieved by doing nothing. Xing Zhan traveled through the famous mountains and rivers and enjoyed the mountain scenery near his hometown, which was a quality of his adherence to "Qing". Only Xing Zhanyi, through "swimming", arrived at the secret realm of the soul and listened to the call of nature. This is not a journey of life, but a return to the true nature of life. And I prefer to drink with Xing Zhanyi, which is the channel for me to connect with him to the spiritual world, and it is a window to open the mutual appreciation between the two of us.
