The "Syrian Democratic Army" led by Syrian Kurdish armed forces confirmed on the 21st that members of the extremist organization "Islamic State" launched an attack on a prison in hasakah province in northeastern Syria on the 20th, in a vain attempt to assist detained members of the "Islamic State" to escape from prison.

The "Syrian Democratic Army" said that "Islamic State" militants detonated a car bomb outside a prison in Hasakah City, the capital of Hasakah Province, on the 20th, and then attacked the Kurdish militia guarding the prison in an attempt to rob the prison.

According to the British-based "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights", "Islamic State" militants and the "Syrian Democratic Army" continued to exchange fire near the prison where the incident occurred until the 21st. Eighteen Syrian Kurdish soldiers and prison guards were killed, and at least 16 Members of the Islamic State were killed.

Rami Abdul Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said it was one of the largest attacks launched by the Islamic State since 2019.

The Islamic State lost its last major stronghold in Syria in March 2019, the town of Baguz in the eastern province of Deir Ezzor, but its remnants remain in the desert and attack from time to time.

The Syrian Democratic Army confirmed that they had arrested 89 armed men near the prison who tried to escape from prison. The Members of the Islamic State who initiated the escape initially hid in houses near the prison, killing some civilians and using them as "human shields."

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, about 3,500 suspected Islamic State members, including some senior members of the extremist group, are being held in the prison.

The Islamic State once seized large tracts of land in Iraq and Syria and declared it the capital of the northern Syrian city of Raqqa. In March 2019, Syrian Kurdish forces announced that they would seize the islamic State's last major stronghold in Syria, detain ISIS members, and guard their families. Some prisons in kurdish armed areas of northeastern Syria hold Members of the Islamic State.
