Xie Xiumei was born in 1932 in Yuti Village, Gaoyang County, Hebei Province. He joined the army in August 1948 and engaged in literary and artistic work in the army. After the outbreak of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, he served as a member of the Cultural and Labor Corps of the Political Department of the 202nd Division of the 68th Army of the Chinese Volunteer Army.
