International Observation: Working together to build a better world in the post-COVID-19 era

On January 17, President Xi Jinping attended the 2022 World Economic Forum video conference in Beijing and delivered a speech entitled "Firm Confidence, Courage to Move Forward to Create a Better World in the Post-EPIDEMIC Era". This is the first multilateral diplomatic event in which President Xi Jinping will participate in 2022.

Looking at Xi Jinping's three speeches at the World Economic Forum, all of them are responding to the questions of the times at an important juncture of historical changes, using Chinese wisdom to clarify the fog in the direction of historical progress, and leading the course of global governance with Chinese solutions.

At the beginning of 2017, the countercurrent of world economic globalization surged undercurrents, trade protectionism and unilateralism tended to rise, and development problems such as the gap between the rich and the poor and the gap between the North and the South became more prominent. Is economic globalization "Alibaba's cave" or "Pandora's box"? How can the world economy get out of trouble?

On January 17, 2017, Xi Jinping faced the "dispute between existence and waste" of economic globalization, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Sharing Responsibilities in the Era and Promoting Global Development" at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, sending out a strong historical voice of China's support for economic globalization: "In the face of the opportunities and challenges brought by economic globalization, the correct choice is to make full use of all opportunities, cooperate to cope with all challenges, and guide the direction of economic globalization." ”

Four years later, the COVID-19 pandemic has raised a new question for the world: What is multilateralism in the 21st century? How to practice true multilateralism?

On January 25, 2021, Xi Jinping delivered a special speech entitled "Let the Torch of Multilateralism Illuminate the Way Forward for Mankind" at the World Economic Forum's "Davos Agenda" Dialogue, clarifying the connotation of multilateralism in the 21st century, pointing out the "true and false distinction" of multilateralism, and prescribing Chinese prescriptions for global development: "The world's problems are complex, and the way to solve them is to uphold and practice multilateralism and promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind." This assertion echoes the assertion four years ago that "multilateralism should be adhered to and the authority and effectiveness of the multilateral system should be upheld."

Time to 2022, the unprecedented changes in a century and the century epidemic are intertwined and superimposed, and the world has entered a period of turbulent change. The uncertainties of economic recovery have increased, the development gap and the immunization gap are widening day by day, and mankind is facing unprecedented challenges.

How to defeat the epidemic? How to build the post-pandemic world? Understanding the historical trend of "going against the grain", the post-epidemic world looks forward to Chinese wisdom. In his speech on January 17, Xi Jinping's answer was loud and clear: "We must advance in the logic of historical progress and develop in the trend of the development of the times." ”

To this end, Xi Jinping put forward a four-point China proposition: work together to defeat the epidemic; resolve various risks and promote the stable recovery of the world economy; cross the development gap and revitalize the global development cause; abandon the Cold War mentality and achieve peaceful coexistence, mutual benefit and win-win results. At the same time, he solemnly stated China's attitude that China will unswervingly promote high-quality development, unswervingly promote reform and opening up, and unswervingly promote the construction of ecological civilization.

Proceeding from the height of history and philosophy, Xi Jinping once again profoundly expounded China's views on economic globalization and multilateralism: economic globalization is the trend of the times, the river rushes to the sea, there will always be a countercurrent, but any adverse current cannot stop the river from going east; all countries must adhere to true multilateralism, adhere to the demolition of walls without building walls, openness without isolation, integration without decoupling, and promote the construction of an open world economy.

Xi Jinping's speech was inspiring, reflecting the common expectations of the people of all countries for abandoning the Cold War mentality and peaceful development, and pointing out the direction for the international community to unite against the epidemic and the stable recovery of the world economy. Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, believes that President Xi Jinping's speech is of landmark significance for promoting global cooperation under the epidemic, and dialogue and cooperation are the only way to achieve peace and prosperity for mankind.

China has always stood on the right side of history and on the side of international fairness and justice. From economic globalization, multilateralism, and then to the trend of history, in the face of the turbulent international situation, Xi Jinping has spoken out of China's voice at the World Economic Forum three times, and what has not changed is the responsibility of a big country with the world in mind and a common destiny. In the face of profound and grand changes in the times, Xi Jinping once again expounded China's propositions, which will surely help the international community to gather consensus and provide important guidelines for jointly building a better world in the post-epidemic era.
