BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The number of illegal immigrants and refugees trying to smuggle them across the Mediterranean sea through Libya to Europe increased significantly in 2021, nearly tripling from the previous year, according to United Nations data.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said in an internal report to the Security Council that between the beginning of 2021 and December 14 of the same year, the Libyan Coast Guard intercepted nearly 31,000 illegal immigrants and refugees in the Mediterranean, nearly double the 12,000 in 2020.

After the overthrow of the Qaddafi regime in 2011, Libya was plunged into a state of instability and an East-West standoff, with the inability of authorities to effectively control coastlines and land borders, leaving stowaways with opportunities. Libya thus became a major transit point for illegal migrants from Africa and the Middle East smuggling into the Mediterranean to Europe.

In recent years, thousands of illegal migrants smuggled by boat have been intercepted and sent back to Libya, where they have been placed in detention centres. In addition, from time to time, some ships capsized due to bad weather and other reasons, resulting in a large number of migrants drowning.

On November 17, 2021, at least 75 stowaways drowned in a shipwreck in western Libyan waters, and 15 others were rescued by fishermen and taken to the western Libyan city of Zuwala.

According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 1,300 illegal migrants and refugees attempting to smuggle into Europe via Libya in 2021 were killed or unaccounted for, significantly higher than in 2020. (Yang Shuyi)
