Jiang Suoqing: A pear story

In the autumn of 1981, I had the opportunity to return to my hometown of Dongfangwu Village, Haiyang County, Shandong Province, after more than 30 years of absence. It is adjacent to Laiyang, which is rich in Laiyang pears. At this time, it is the harvest season of the pear orchard, and I have lived at home for a few days and tasted the hometown pears that I have not eaten for more than 30 years. Comrade Xu Chunyang, the political commissar of the local garrison, a close comrade-in-arms of my beloved Comrade Feng Fulin, and also the head of my unit, learned that I had returned to my hometown and specially sent a car to pick me up at his house as a guest. When I went, I brought him a basket of hometown pears. But as soon as I arrived at his house, the first thing that entertained me was pear. I said that I had eaten too many pears in the past few days and really didn't want to eat them. Commissar Xu said to me, "You must eat this pear, and I will tell you a story about the pear." "Then he told a true, moving story...

It was in the autumn of 1947, when the Kuomintang army attacked the Jiaodong Liberated Area and occupied the city of Laiyang, which had been liberated for many years. In early December of that year, our army launched a campaign to retake Laiyang City. Feng Fulin, commander of the third battalion of the 13th Regiment of the 5th Division of the Second Column of the East China Field Army, and Xu Chunyang, instructor, led the whole battalion to undertake the task of defending the phoenix top of the seventh and eighth huali southeast of Shuitougou (present-day Laixi County) to block the enemy who was reinforced from Qingdao to Laiyang, which was an integral part of the famous Shuigou head blocking battle on the East China battlefield. In order to open up the road to reinforce Laiyang, the enemy used aircraft, tanks, and artillery, but all the officers and men of the three battalions, in their positions, with their fearless revolutionary heroism and with the help of millet plus rifles, repelled the enemy's attacks again and again, successfully blocked the enemy, effectively guaranteed the victory in the Battle of Laiyang, and created a brilliant example of the second column of Huaye successfully blocking the enemy's tanks with infantry.

In this blockade battle, the masses of the people gave support to the troops, and the local villagers risked their lives to deliver the food they could get to our army's positions and toasted a glass of wine to every soldier. The most touching thing is that every family is busy so that the children and soldiers can taste the local rich Laiyang pear. However, due to the fact that Laiyang pears could not survive for a long time, one village only found one pear, and the village cadres gave this vegetable Yang pear full of affection to Xu Chunyang instructor. Instructor Xu held this pear in his hand, as if holding the fiery hearts of the villagers, how could he be willing to eat it, so he handed it to a wounded warrior. This soldier who was bleeding from his mouth needed this sweet pear at this time! But just as he left the position, he shoved the pear into the hands of the squad leader. In this way, the squad leader gave the platoon leader, and the platoon leader gave the platoon leader another company commander. The company commander said that since the beginning of the battle, Feng Fulin's battalion commander had not been able to take care of eating and drinking, and should be given to him to eat. However, After Feng took the pear, he gave it to a wounded man. As the wounded man passed by Instructor Xu, he quietly placed himself in front of Instructor Xu. By this time the battle was nearing its end. Instructor Xu put the pear in Commander Feng's hand and said:

"Old Feng, this pear turned a big circle and turned back, or you ate it!"

Commander Feng got this pear for the second time and said with deep feeling:

Although this pear is not large, it is both the heart of the masses and the love of comrades. Why can we defeat an enemy that is several times stronger than us? This pear is the answer. Are you doing political and ideological work, or are you going to handle this pear? ”

At this moment, a stretcher carrying the wounded happened to pass by them, and Instructor Xu bit down on a large mouthful of pears, fed them into the mouths of the wounded, and then shoved the pear into the wounded man's hands, and before the wounded could react, the stretcher had carried him away from the position.

The battle was won. Like the "Shuitougou Phoenix Top Defense Battle" that left a page of bare pants in the history of our army, the story of a pear is forever engraved in the hearts of all the officers and men of the third battalion of the thirteenth regiment of the 2nd Column and 5th Division of Huaye in that year.
