Kyle: Dort wants to renew his contract with Akanji, who is an absolute leader player

Manuel Arcangi is an important part of Borussia Dortmund's defence. However, the 26-year-old's contract with the team is only until 2023. Sebastian Kyle, who is about to take over as Dortmund manager, has announced that the club wants to renew Akanji's contract, calling him an absolute leader player.

Borussia Dortmund want to keep their centre-back Manuel Akanji for the long term. "Manuel is an absolute leader player and he played all the games for us when he was in good health. He's a very important link in our defence and he's grown well. We're confident in his ability, so of course we'll try to extend his current contract expiring in 2023," said Kyle, who was selected as Dort's manager.

According to media information, Arcangi, who returned from a knee injury in the German Cup against St. Pauli, should at least extend his contract until 2026. Kyle, who is currently head of Borussia Dortmund's licensed players division, will succeed Michael Zork, who will retire from his sporting director position this summer.

Arcangi has been playing for Borussia Dortmund since January 2018. Almost exactly four years ago, Dortmund signed the defender from Switzerland's top club Basel for around €21.5 million. Since then, Akánji has made a total of 146 appearances for the Hornets.
