The day before yesterday (17th), Tesla shareholder Ross Gable asked this question on Twitter.
"Correct! (Correct)" Elon Musk immediately took up the conversation, confirming this in an unmistakable tone.
But just one day later, when the "Correct" was still in the ear, the US prosecutors came with the news that a Tesla driver in California had died in a traffic accident in 2019 because of the improper use of Tesla's Autopilot function. At present, the perpetrator has been formally indicted by the prosecution for "manslaughter".

Autopilot and FSD
Although it is very dramatic that the flag was set up to overturn only one day, it is very dramatic to talk about "rollover" this time, but it is actually the overturning of the Autopilot (automatic assisted driving) system. It is still significantly different from FSD (Full Self-Driving) in terms of function.
First of all, we must briefly introduce the differences between the two.
According to Tesla's official differentiation method, Autopilot is divided into two categories: "basic model" and "enhanced version".
The former comes with the car, does not require additional costs, but can only achieve the adaptive cruise and lane keeping functions of the vehicle. As for the latter, it belongs to the optional package category that requires additional money (the domestic version needs to pay an additional 32,000 yuan), but has a strong auxiliary driving ability.
According to the official description of it, it can only assist driving on closed expressways: automatically drive in and out of highway ramps or overpass forks, exceed slow-moving vehicles, automatically assist lane changes on highways, parallel parking and vertical parking.
At the same time, the enhanced Autopilot also has the ability to summon vehicles in the right scene. Although it cannot be achieved in complex underground parking garages or even in more crowded surface parking lots. The taste of showing a sense of technology far outweighs the practicality.
As for FSD (Full Self-Driving), it is an optional package located on top of the Autopilot Enhanced Edition (the domestic version needs to pay an additional 64,000 yuan), so that the vehicle can identify traffic lights and parking signs through visual sensors in the assisted driving state, and can cut into the urban ground road to automatic assisted driving.
In fact, what caused the serious car accident in California in 2019 was not Musk confidently saying the "Correct" FSD function, but the more "low-level" Autopilot.
Although with the current information, we don't know whether this is the basic version of Autopilot or the enhanced version that requires payment.

About this "two deaths" accident
According to the U.S. police accident report, the fatal incident occurred in the suburb of Los Angeles in December 2019. At the time, the driver involved in the accident, Kevin George Aziz Riad, was driving a Model S off the highway ramp.
According to the accident report, the driver riad activated the "auto assisted driving" function, and then the vehicle directly ran a red light and hit a normal Honda Civic sedan.
Although prosecutors did not directly mention "Autopilot" in the indictment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) subsequently confirmed in an interview with the media that the driver who caused the accident did activate the function before the accident. And at the time of the accident, it was Autopilot who was controlling the vehicle that caused the accident.
It is reported that the driver who caused the accident has not yet pleaded guilty and is on bail. According to court documents, the preliminary hearing will be held on February 23.
To sum up, musk's "Correct" is "self-consistent" in that case, because he is targeting Ross Gable's inquiry about the FSD's capabilities. The FSD beta version was pushed by Tesla to some car owners through the "Early Access" program in October 2020.
So far, the FSD function has been online for less than 16 months and is still in the BATE testing stage.
Although both are intelligent driver assistance features that Tesla provides to consumers, there are obvious differences between FSD and Autopilot.
Although it is not FSD that causes trouble, this does not mean that FSD is really "safe".
Taking the FSD v9.0 BATE version, which was called a "major innovation" in July this year, as an example, the measurements of Tesla owners in North America proved that after upgrading to this version, vehicles still cannot correctly identify lanes and many specific obstacles.
As for the unprotected left turn function that measures the strength of the vehicle's automatic driving ability, it is far from the floating clouds in the sky - some owners find that if they completely let go and let the vehicle automatically turn left, then the biggest possibility is to turn the left head directly into the reverse lane, or even drive on the road teeth.
Full Self-Driving's literal translation is "fully autonomous driving", fortunately, there are few Tesla owners in reality, and they will really treat this FSD function as L4 level automatic driving, willing to let go of their own and their passers-by to the machine.
And this, I believe, is the truth of the so-called FSD "0 casualty accident".
For quite some time, Musk himself has been consciously or unconsciously rhythmic, trying to distort FSD as the world's first practical automatic driving system. The big boss's holding has also caused Tesla a lot of trouble.
Eric C. Williams, Tesla's vice president of legal affairs, wrote to Miguel D. Acosta, head of the Self-Driving Vehicle Division of the California Department of Motor Vehicles, in December 2020, admitting the fact that both Autopilot and FSD are only L2-level intelligent driving systems.
However, looking at Musk's performance on Twitter, there may be a temporary convergence, but it will not be long before the so-called "Self-Driving" continues to be trumpeted.
There is no doubt that Musk is committed to pushing Tesla towards the spirit of "Full Self-Driving", which can be called "no regrets despite a hundred deaths"... However, it is not he who is "opened up", but those who are loyal users of Tesla.
