"Horizons" magazine has twice held the "Horizons National Middle School Students Essay Competition", which has become one of the top writing competitions in China and has received widespread attention from middle school students, teachers and parents. The "Centennial People" theme essay contest held this time includes members of national, provincial and municipal writers' associations, teachers and students from universities, junior high schools, as well as media practitioners, workers, and farmers, and the social coverage is very extensive.

Contestants need to choose their own role models and admired figures from the outstanding figures emerging in the long history of China, and use the pen in their hands to describe their impact on their spiritual world and even their daily lives, and write their lives.

Xu Zhaoshou, a writer and dean of the School of Journalism and Media at Northwest Normal University, said in an interview with China News Network that such competitions can stimulate the creative vitality of young people and encourage young people to create. Especially for middle school students, they can be encouraged to write articles based on their own reading and learning and their own thinking.

"The usual themes are familiar to them and are in life, but this time they chose 'centennial figures' to let middle school students stand in the big vision of the country." Xu Zhaoshou said that for the younger generation, the excessive emphasis on individual characteristics and the emphasis on the self have shown some drawbacks in daily learning and life, and they need to think about life and the world with a collective and holistic concept.

Participating in the "Centennial People" essay contest and choosing your own writing objects from excellent characters is to play a role model. Xu Zhaoshou believes that by walking into the inner world of these characters who have influenced China, their spirit will make middle school students yearn for it, and naturally learn from the role models this quality of dedication and contribution to society.

Zhou Daming from Shanghai, who won the first prize of the competition, described his father as a veteran of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, hoping that through these words, he would inspire future generations to remember history and cherish the current "quiet years".

As the organizer of the event, Bao Guoxian stressed when talking about the significance of this event that participating in such activities can not only allow the contestants, especially the young contestants, to improve their thinking and sublimate their understanding in the creation of words, but also help them to obtain spiritual nutrition from outstanding figures in the process of looking back at history, and motivate themselves to grow into people who have contributed to the country and society.

Bao Guoxian believes that holding this event on the platform of "Horizons" magazine is a measure to release positive energy for the times through this platform. It is understood that Horizons magazine was founded in 1997. As a comprehensive abstract journal, in 2005, Horizons won the highest award of domestic journals - "National 100 Key Social Science Journals Award"; in 2008, it was selected for the exhibition and broadcast of CCTV's "Readers' Preferred Journals"; from 2005 to 2016, it was shortlisted for 12 consecutive years in the "Top 100 Journals in Asia for Chinese Journals Online Reading".
