It was Sohan's 16th attempt to obtain parole and the first time a state prosecutor did not object to parole. Sohan's parole was also supported by Robert's two sons, but Robert's other children strongly opposed it.
Sohan said he had "little memory" of the assassination itself, but admitted he took the gun to the hotel where it happened and fired.
On June 5, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy, then a U.S. senator and attorney general, had just delivered his victory speech in the California Democratic presidential primary just before his assassination. As he walked past the hotel's storage room, Sohan, a 24-year-old Palestinian, pulled the trigger.
Robert died the next day, less than 5 years after the assassination of his brother John F. Kennedy in office.
At the time, Sohan was convicted of murder. Initially, he was sentenced to death, which was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Sohan, a Jerusalem-born Palestinian, said in a televised interview in prison in 1989 that he had assassinated Robert because he felt "betrayed" by advocating the dispatch of military aircraft to Israel during his campaign.
