Leaking oil tanker

On January 16, an oil tanker was transporting oil to the La Pampira refinery on the coast of Lima in the Pacific Ocean, just as a tsunami was triggered by a volcanic eruption in Tonga, and huge waves moved the ship, causing an oil spill, according to Agence France-Presse. Authorities said the spill was brought under control within hours and clean-up work was underway in the area.

The La Panpila refinery belongs to Spain's Repsol Company and is peru's main oil processing plant. The refinery's statement said they activated safety measures when the spill occurred and that their emergency department managed to contain the incident on the same day.

Neither the company nor authorities said how much crude oil spilled, but said it would continue to coordinate with local governments to control and clean up coastal crude.

Separately, naval officials confirmed that the Italian-flagged oil tanker was moored in the gulf of The Port of Callao and was ordered to be suspended until the investigation was completed.

Staff who are cleaning up the beach

Brenda, a worker in protective suits, collects oil that washes up on the beaches of the northern coastal area of the Lima coast. Brenda told AFP: "We would like to tell the environment minister to follow up on this matter and that those responsible for this will be sanctioned because it will affect fishermen, the fishing population and marine animals."

Peru's Ministry of the Environment has begun monitoring the ecological damage of beaches.

The undersea volcanic eruptions in the Pacific island nation of Tonga triggered a series of anomalies that triggered tsunamis that alerted countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the West Coast of the United States, Chile and Ecuador.

According to abcnews, in Peru, two people drowned on the beach because of strong waves. Meanwhile, local authorities closed three nearby beaches and evacuated tourists on the afternoon of Jan. 16.
