Recently, according to foreign media reports, the relevant departments in India proposed that from October 1, all production passenger cars must be equipped with at least six airbags.

India: All cars are fitted with at least 6 airbags

In addition to the two airbags already required by all cars, the government wants automakers to provide two side airbags and two curtain airbags to protect passengers sitting in the back seat.

The Ministry of Road Transport said in a notice that the side airbags are mainly used to alleviate torso damage in the event of a side collision, while the curtain airbags will be deployed in the event of a side impact or rollover, mainly to alleviate head injury".

The draft aims to reduce the number of traffic fatalities in India, with nearly 132,000 deaths in more than 366,000 traffic accidents in 2020, according to the government.

In addition, although most of the cars in India are priced below $10,000, India is the world's fifth largest automobile consumer market, with annual car sales of about 3 million vehicles, and the government's mandatory requirement for car companies to increase the number of airbags will also increase the cost of cars.

It is reported that the government will solicit opinions from businesses and the public in the next 30 days, after which the draft will be finally released.
