On April 21, 1951, the Turkish Brigade of the "United Nations Army" dispatched more than a dozen tanks and eight strikers to cover a reinforced infantry battalion of more than 400 people and launched a frenzied attack on the Gaotaishan position held by the 541st Regiment of the 181st Division of the 60th Army of the Volunteer Army.
But their repeated attacks were repelled by the stubborn counterattack of the May Fourth Regiment and One Battalion.
The next day, the Turkish brigade changed its style of play and concentrated its forces and firepower on the 541.2 heights at the forefront of the regiment for a fierce attack.
The commanders and fighters of the first battalion and the second company fought extremely bravely and tenaciously, so that the enemy was defeated again, but they also paid a considerable price of casualties.
The commander of the regimental battalion predicted that the enemy would shell frantically, and in order to reduce casualties, he immediately changed the battle plan, leaving only a combat group on the height of 541.2 to hold his position, and the main force of the company retreated to wait for the opportunity to counterattack.
The leader of the group was Peng Fuli, a 28-year-old Soldier from Ziyang in Shaanxi Province, deputy squad leader of the second squad, who took the soldiers Dai Jinhua and Li Guicai with him and expressed his determination to complete the task.
On the morning of April 22, the enemy artillery did indeed begin to indiscriminately bombard the 541.2 heights, and Peng Fuli and three others immediately hid in the anti-slope fortifications.
After the artillery blew up the position beyond recognition, the enemy dispatched two more infantry teams, under the cover of more than a dozen tanks, to attack the 541.2 heights.
Faced with the enemy who pounced on them, the three volunteer soldiers calmly fought. They insisted on the strategy of bringing the enemy closer and then fighting, throwing out more than forty grenades in a row, repelling the enemy's first charge.
Peng Fuli saw the problem after this confrontation with the enemy: although the enemy's artillery fire was fierce, the combat effectiveness of the infantry was relatively weak, and although there were only three people on our side, we could completely deal with the enemy infantry to the end.
Next, he led Dai Jinhua and Li Guicai to repel two rounds of Turkish infantry in a row. But unfortunately, both Dai and Li were seriously injured in the fierce battle, leaving only Peng Fuli to hold his position.
Although the situation was extremely critical, it aroused Peng Fuli's fighting spirit even more, and he was determined to persevere no matter what, and never let the position fall into the hands of the enemy!
Knowing that the battle would get harder and harder, he collected all the grenades of his comrades, bundled up the strips of cloth torn from fried noodle bags, and loaded several guns with bullets, waiting for the next wave of the enemy's attack.
When the enemy shelled again, Peng Fuli was keenly aware that their infantry was playing tricks: deliberately shouting and shouting to kill on the right side of the high ground, and blindly firing their guns, while the left side of the high ground did not move.
Obviously, the terrain on the right is steep and unfavorable for attack, while the slope on the left is gentle, according to the reason, the enemy should abandon the right to attack the left, why is it only on the right side?
This must be a conspiracy of the enemy to play east and west! He decided to take the matter into account, and although he only looked at the enemy on the right, he kept a close eye on the movement on the left.
After firing a shot for a while, Peng Fuli estimated that the enemy had already touched the left, and immediately turned to the left, throwing the grenade that had been prepared long ago continuously, blowing up the enemy who was planning to carry out a sneak attack.
The enemy retreated again, but Peng Fuli had very little ammunition left in his hands, and he couldn't help but feel sad.
Just then, the enemy began shelling again, and a shell exploded next to Peng Fuli, and he immediately passed out.
Fortunately, it didn't take long for him to wake up and see a half-cut carbine in the dirt next to his left hand, and a few yellow bullets in the magazine.
"Haha, don't worry about ammunition!" Inspired, Peng Fuli jumped up and, under the cover of smoke and dust, quietly crawled to the front of the position to find bullets from the dead enemy soldiers.
This worked well, and he not only searched several magazines, but also retrieved two intact carbines.
In the process of bombing, he also found two enemies who had not died and woken up, so he took advantage of their confusion and used their bayonets to complete the "formalities" for them.
With ammunition in his hand, Peng Fuli strengthened his determination and confidence in holding his position.
At dusk, the infantry battalion of the Turkish Brigade dispatched its entire battalion and attacked Highland 541.2 from three different directions.
In the face of such a large number of enemy soldiers, although Peng Fuli had only one person, he did not have any fear, and with the heroic spirit of "one husband and one hand, no one can open up", he stood on the position and bravely counterattacked the enemy!
Grenades flew at the enemy one by one, blowing them apart and retreating.
Strings of bullets shot at the enemy, bursting out the anger of the volunteer soldiers who would never let the position fall into the hands of the enemy!
Just when Peng Fuli once again ran out of ammunition and the enemy shouted to launch a group charge, there was a roar from the artillery position of the May Fourth Regiment, and even the main force of the battalion rose up to fight back, giving Peng Fuli the most powerful and timely support!
In the face of the all-out counterattack of the volunteer troops, the Turkish brigade left countless dead soldiers on our positions and completely collapsed.
During the whole day of bloody struggle, Peng Fuli led his combat team to kill and wound more than 100 enemies in total, and he alone annihilated more than 70 enemies.
What is even more surprising is that after two comrades were seriously injured, Peng Fuli created a miracle of a man holding on to a hill and never letting the position be breached by the enemy, becoming a legendary soldier in the history of the volunteer army.
His insistence made the enemy's four-hundred-man infantry battalion unable to open a breakthrough to the main position on the high platform, and won enough time for the commander of the regiment and battalion to mobilize his troops and deploy counterattacks, which was the first credit for this victory.
After the battle, this combat group was commended by the General Order of the Sixtieth Army and the Third Corps of the Volunteer Army, and Peng Fuli was awarded the honorable title of "Hero of the First Class".
