Curlers were named to the Australian Winter Olympic squad for the first time in history

Sydney, January 16 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Olympic Committee announced on January 16 that the curling mixed doubles combination composed of Tully Gill and Dean Hewitt was selected for the Australian Winter Olympics delegation. The combination will be the first pair of curlers in Australian history to participate in the Winter Olympics.

The two players were also the first players to be selected for the Australian Winter Olympics team. The head of the Australian Winter Olympic delegation, Lipschut, said that it was a remarkable milestone for the Australian Winter Olympics delegation.

Gill, 22, and Hewitt, 27, began pairing up in the curling mixed doubles in 2018 and finished fourth at the 2019 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships in Stavanger, Norway, setting australia's best at the World Championships. In December last year, the duo performed well in the Winter Olympic qualification tournament in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, and qualified for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Gill said it was a lifelong dream for both of them, and it was unbelievable that the dream had finally come true after so long of hard work.

Hewitt said he hoped their appearance at the Winter Olympics would get more Australians interested in and involved in the sport of curling. (End)
