Huang Lei: No, I'm not a person who will be sad for a long time. At that time, I was in the midst of the epidemic, and I felt that I had to find a way to solve this problem quickly. At the end of last year, in order to cope with the impact of the epidemic, we have decided to completely abandon foreign dramas and make a theater festival with pure Chinese theater performances. In addition, "Drama New Life" also came into being, at that time, no one thought that there could be such a program, "drama + variety", and it was also very serious. We have a lot of whims in our lives, and looking back, it may be history.
Yangcheng Evening News: The drama variety show "Drama New Life" is like an experiment, but it has also aroused the question of "not doing the right thing", as a trader and promoter, what do you think?
Huang Lei: Liu Xiaoye (one of the main guests of the show) told me, and someone asked him, "Why do you dramatists want to go on variety shows, don't you feel ashamed?" I told him that he should answer like this, "Don't you feel ashamed that Variety shows don't do more serious things?" "We should use more windows and more forms to convey serious, professional, and seriously created works."
Yangcheng Evening News: With "New Life of Drama", is the Wuzhen Theater Festival more "breaking the circle"? How do you think about the variety effect it brings?
Huang Lei: Many of the audiences in the Wuzhen Theater Festival are familiar with drama, and we are a circle. I never thought of "breaking the circle", but I can "expand the circle" and let more people like it. Someone told me that after "New Life in Drama", Liu Xiaoye, Zhao Xiaosu, Wu Bi, Ding Yiteng, Liu Xiaoyi, Liu Tianqi were all chased, and the repertoire they brought at this theater festival was also sold out at once. Will they also become "stars"? I would say that of course they should be stars, but they are not going to "entertain to death" because their roots are laid out there.
Yangcheng Evening News: In order to make up for the regret of not having overseas dramas, this year's Wuzhen Drama Festival has added a screening of "Good Drama from the World", can overseas dramas return in the next session?
Huang Lei: Actually, this can't be predicted, but I am particularly optimistic because the epidemic will always pass. I'm not saying it's impossible without foreign theater troupes, but this year we still make this festival very interesting, and we don't just think about the question of "whether it's good or not", but also provoke everyone to think.
And the Wuzhen Drama Festival not only has performances, but also youth competitions, forums, carnivals, drama fairs, etc., including this year's "college observation" unit, which is to let everyone see what art schools are doing now, what kind of state and level. Huang Lei: The theater festival should have its extension. In addition to theater performances, Wuzhen Drama Festival should have its own way of life. Drama is serious, it creates a distance between people, the theater itself is also social, but people in the same magnetic field have built a bridge of communication in their hearts, and the theater market is this invisible "bridge".
Yangcheng Evening News: In this year's theater festival, is there any idea you want to achieve but have not realized?
Huang Lei: Yes. Teacher Lai Shengchuan's play "Once Upon a Time" is a story about memories, the beginning of the story is happening on the snowy mountain, so we especially want to build the periphery into a "snow mountain", everyone walks to the entrance of the "snow mountain", slowly circle into this mountain pass, and read this story in the snowy mountain.
