Located at No. 192 Daqiao Road, Huangyan District, Taizhou City, Qi Zhi School is a special school, and the children who go to school here are also "different".

Some of them are unable to take care of themselves in their lives, some do not like to communicate with people, because of intellectual disabilities, these children can not learn normally like children in ordinary schools. But fortunately, they also had a happy childhood, because there is a "headmaster mother" here.

The "principal mother" of the children's name is Luo Jun, 57 years old, the principal of Qizhi School in Huangyan District, who has been engaged in special education for 32 years.

Daily communication is "typing sign language"

"What does education mean for a special child?" This is the answer that Luo Jun has been looking for in his 32 years as a special education teacher.

In 1989, at the age of 26, Luo Jun came to Luqiao School for the Deaf and Dumb (formerly Huangyan City School for the Deaf and Dumb) and became a special education teacher. "I heard that I was going to teach at a school for the deaf and dumb, and my family didn't agree, so I told them, 'Go give it a try, it's a big deal and come back!'" At that time, she did not expect that this test was more than 30 years.

After joining the company, Luo Jun was arranged to serve as a Chinese teacher and class teacher for first-year students. In order to integrate into the sign language teaching environment of deaf and mute children as soon as possible, she lives in the teacher's dormitory every night to "pester" experienced teachers to teach her sign language, and even subconsciously use sign language for daily communication, and several times she is treated as a deaf and dumb girl by passers-by.

"At that time, special education was not paid enough attention, and most of the teachers in the school graduated from ordinary teacher training majors like me, and the experience of special education was slowly explored in practice." Luo Jun said that at first, teaching deaf students was basically "silent teaching", the teacher did not speak, and used sign language to communicate with the children. However, she believes that children's language skills cannot be easily abandoned, and she has always insisted on oral teaching.

During the class, Luo Jun will raise the volume as much as possible and actively interact with the children, sometimes after a class, the voice is dumb; in life, she also insists that the children talk as much as possible and communicate with them patiently. When the children were finally able to pronounce "Quiet Night Thoughts" in clearer spoken language, she shed tears of excitement.

In the 20 years of teaching in the school for the deaf and dumb, Luo Jun has never heard the children clearly say " Teacher, happy holidays!" But the children's silent blessings had been cherished in her heart.

Special education requires "professional love"

In 2008, due to the needs of work, Luo Jun left the school for the deaf and dumb, which was developing at a good momentum, and accepted the position of principal of QiZhi School in Huangyan District. She was greeted only by dilapidated temporary school buildings, scruffy students, and a faculty that lacked the background of special education.

However, for a new principal, it is not easy to change a school. "Everyone was telling me to 'forget it,' but I didn't want to give up." Luo Jun, a new official, lit the "three fires": she used her connections to run to a number of enterprises to solicit sponsorship and put the restoration of the school building on the agenda; recruited young new teachers and strengthened the teaching force; adjusted the curriculum to cultivate students' self-care ability in a targeted manner. With her efforts, the school changed little by little.

In the 12 years of teaching at Qi Zhi School, Luo Jun felt the most profound sentence: "Without love, there is no education; without professional love, it is impossible to do a good job in special education." "The biggest problem for children with mental disabilities is poor ability to receive education. Normal children teach things once, and children here need teachers to teach them dozens of times, even hundreds, thousands of times. ”

There is a mirror at the entrance of Qi Zhi School, which is a "gift" prepared for the children when Luo Jun first came to the school. Every day before class, she would take the hands of "little sloppy" people and bring them to the mirror to see if their faces were clean or not. "When I see myself dirty in the mirror, the children will feel shy, then I will help them wash their hands and wipe their faces, and slowly they will become clean and will wash their hands and face by themselves." Luo Jun believes that although these children have mental disabilities, they are also eager to be recognized by others, and the duty of special education teachers is to lead children, give them confidence, and make them believe that "I can".

Take responsibility for their lives

After coming to Qi Zhi School to teach, Luo Jun thought about how to open a "door" for this special group of children every day. Therefore, she has made great efforts to cultivate children's self-care ability and love of life attitude.

When the weather is nice, she takes her children on outings and teaches them to make taxidermy plants; on holidays, she takes them to her home and teaches them to cook, cook, and learn basic life skills. In addition, she regularly organizes students to go out of the school gate to experience life scenes such as crossing the street and consulting in the hospital, closely integrating school education with life.

All along, Luo Jun's greatest wish is that her children can live with dignity after graduation. But she also knows that a small number of mentally handicapped children can enter social work after graduation, and many more children can only stay at home, once again out of touch with society.

Whenever the semester ended, Luo Jun did not have time to breathe a sigh of relief, and he had to run back and forth between the Disabled Persons' Federation and various welfare enterprises, just to help the children find a job. "The children call me 'teacher' and I am responsible for their lives," she said. ”

When he saw that the children learned to take care of themselves and could also enter the welfare enterprise to work, Luo Jun's heart was full of happiness. In her eyes, children with mental disorders also deserve to have a brilliant life.

Luo Jun has always had a small wish: she hopes that every community can build a sunshine shelter center, so that children who have graduated but cannot enter the welfare enterprise can do some simple work in the shelter center; more importantly, let them get opportunities for entertainment and communication.
