"Uncle Zhao's writing is really good." "Atmospheric, powerful, beautiful." "Uncle, you can fully be a teacher at this level." ...... Teachers and students who leave classes every day in the art building of Ningxia Normal University, but whenever they pass by the security room and see the calligraphy works hanging on the wall, they can't help but praise a few words, and every time at this time, the 56-year-old Zhao will scratch his head like a child and say in an embarrassed voice: "No, no, it is far worse than the teacher." ”

The uncle Zhao who is unanimously praised by the teachers and students of the Academy of Fine Arts is Zhao Shoubei, who is responsible for the security work of the academy, and he is particularly happy and grateful for the recognition of his calligraphy by teachers and students, because it is precisely under the encouragement and help of the teachers and students of the college that he has the opportunity to contact professional calligraphy teaching, and it is really the first time to be so close to the art of calligraphy.
Zhao Shoubei, a native of Shicha Village, Wangwa Town, Pengyang County. Since childhood, he was influenced by his father to have a strong interest in the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy, "My father was a teacher, and the people of their time used brushes to write, and I remember that the lesson plans prepared by my father were all brushed small letters, which were particularly beautiful." At that time, I thought that one day I would write a good letter like my father. ”
Because he liked it, from the age of ten, Zhao Shoubei picked up a pen like his father. "At that time, my family was poor, and paper and pencil were very expensive." Because he could not afford to buy paper and pencil, Zhao Shoubei wrote on the "paper" composed of large square bricks, dipped in yellow clay with an abandoned bald brush, although it was far worse than his father's words, but he was already very happy to be able to write it out one by one.
Later, due to the family's livelihood, Zhao Shoubei went out to work with several elders in the village before he graduated from junior high school, because he did not understand technology, he could only work as a small worker in the construction site, holding bricks, carrying sand, and mud... It's hard. "Although he gave up his studies, he could not lose his writing" Zhao Shoubei always had a dream, and as long as he had time, he would take the polished iron rod and practice on the paved sand table.
After earning some savings from part-time work, Zhao Shoubei returned to Pengyang to set up a vocational skills training institution, specializing in teaching migrant workers welding, wall building and other techniques. Instead of running around, he also had more time to practice writing, not only to appreciate it himself, but also to write the Spring Festival league for free for migrant workers in schools on the eve of the Spring Festival.
In 2020, when the epidemic broke out and fewer migrant workers participated in the training, Zhao Shoubei's training class was closed, and in July of that year, after being introduced, he entered Ningxia Normal College to become a security guard. At first, he was assigned to the Conservatory of Music, and later, when he inadvertently walked into the art building, when he saw the calligraphy and fine art works hanging on the wall, he could no longer move his feet, and immediately applied to the security company for job transfer.
With the consent of the company, he stepped into the hall of art as he wished. Here, he reads and listens attentively every day, and practices writing with scrap newspapers in the security room after work. This move of his was also discovered by the leaders of the Academy of Fine Arts, who not only gave him a brush and rice paper, but also invited him to participate in the academy's calligraphy training class. The first time he met a professional teacher, Zhao Shoubei cherished the rare learning opportunity.
"After writing calligraphy for half a lifetime, I have always been thinking about it myself, and I feel very good about myself, but I didn't expect that after entering the professional training class, I found that my font was not only not good-looking, but even the pen was extremely irregular." After Zhao Shoubei found his own gap, he actively asked the teacher for advice and communicated with his classmates, because he was eager to learn, had understanding, and had decades of calligraphy skills, not only quickly mastered the rules of pen use, but also made great progress in calligraphy. "Before, I only dared to write large characters, because the technical requirements of small characters were too high, and I couldn't reach them at all, you see, now, my small letters can also be hung on the wall." Zhao Shoubei pointed to the calligraphy works hanging in the security room and said proudly.
Zhao Shoubei's persistent pursuit and diligent efforts in calligraphy not only reaped success for himself, but also directly affected and drove the enthusiasm of students in the college.
"The security guard master is still studying calligraphy so diligently in his 50s, which can be said to set a good example for the students of the college, and everyone not only admires but also is deeply 'stimulated', and now the momentum of learning is much higher." Feng Chao, dean of the Academy of Fine Arts of Ningxia Normal University, said.
Now, as soon as he has time, Zhao Shoubei strolls in the art building, stops in front of his favorite calligraphy works, looks at it for a long time, carefully ponders his calligraphy skills and at the same time, greater ambitions are brewing in his heart, "I want to practice brush characters more finely and write better, set up a calligraphy training class, teach children to write for free, and make some contributions to inheriting and carrying forward the traditional Chinese character culture." Now, Zhao Shoubei, who has obtained the title certificate of "National Senior Calligrapher", has become closer and closer to his dream with decades of unremitting persistence and dedication.
