Songyang Academy was founded in the eighth year of the Northern Wei Dynasty (484 AD) as a place of Buddhist activity called Songyang Temple. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, it became a place of Taoist activity, and Emperor Gaozong and Wu Zetian of Tang twice used it as a palace.
During the Northern Song Dynasty, it became a famous educational place, and the famous Confucians Fan Zhongyan, Cheng Yi, Cheng Hao, Sima Guang and others all lectured here, and part of Sima Guang's historical masterpiece "Zizhi Tongjian" was completed in the academy. These famous Confucian lectures not only made Songyang Academy the first of the four major academies in the Northern Song Dynasty, but also made Songyang Academy one of the birthplaces of Song Dynasty science.
