Public video footage shows Avila driving a white sedan from her home to a row of bins at 2 p.m. on Jan. 7, throwing a black garbage bag containing a baby into the bin and driving away. Fortunately, three scavengers heard cries while rummaging through the bins that night and found garbage bags containing babies. The three quickly wrapped the baby in a towel, and one of them called the police. According to the police, the baby has been taken to the hospital for treatment and is currently in stable condition.
Police arrested Avila, the mother of abandoned babies, on January 10 on charges of attempted murder and child abuse. The head of the Hobbs Police Department said the baby's father was a minor and therefore police would not release his identity. Avila was separated from the child's father in August 2021.
