After the price of the whole vehicle increased, Tesla's autopilot software also increased in price.
On the morning of January 8, Tesla CEO Musk said on social media that the price of Tesla's fully automated driving system (FSD) will rise to $12,000 on January 17, an increase of $0.2 compared with the current price.
Although tesla FSD is called fully autonomous driving, it has not yet achieved the level of unmanned driving, and the main functions include automatic assisted lane change, automatic assisted navigation driving, automatic parking, summoning function and so on. Tesla said on its official website that the activation and use of the above functions will require billions of miles of driving distance to achieve reliability that far exceeds that of human drivers; it also depends on administrative approval. As the above autonomous driving functions evolve and improve, vehicles will continue to be upgraded through OTA over-the-air software updates.
At present, Tesla FSD has two purchase methods: one-time payment and subscription. After several increases in the one-time payment price of the US version, it rose from the initial $6,000 to $10,000, and the domestic price rose from 56,000 yuan to 64,000 yuan in 2020. Last July, Tesla officially launched a subscription policy, which costs $199 per month.
Software services have already begun to contribute revenue to Tesla. According to the financial report, Tesla's service revenue including FSD in the third quarter of last year was $894 million, accounting for 6.5% of the quarterly revenue of $13.757 billion. The gross margin of Tesla's automotive business reached 30.5% in the quarter, creating a record high.
Software charges will also bring room for imagination for longer-term revenue potential. Minsheng Securities predicts that in 2030, Tesla will have more than 18 million existing car owner users, of which nearly 80% will become FSD subscription paying users, FSD's subscription service fee will reach 16 billion US dollars / year, according to its gross profit margin of 80%, the corresponding FSD subscription service fee gross profit will be as high as 13 billion US dollars.
However, the safety hazards brought about by autonomous driving have also aroused regulatory attention. In August 2021, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into Tesla's autopilot assistance system, requiring Tesla to provide specific information about the vehicle, detailing how the vehicle responds to emergencies in autonomous driving mode.
Tesla's self-driving technology route does not rely on hardware such as lidar, but relies on algorithms to iterate, which needs to be based on larger-scale vehicles and driving data on the road. Tesla's delivery data in the past year has performed well, according to the announcement, in 2021, Tesla's deliveries reached 936172 units, an increase of 87% year-on-year; of which the Model 3 and Model Y delivered 911208 units in the whole year, accounting for more than 97% of the total delivery.
In addition to Tesla, the new car-making forces are also actively launching their own self-driving products. NIO Pilot' driver assistance system NIO Pilot comes at a price of 15,000 yuan and 39,000 yuan, including different service functions, and the company has said that NIO Pilot's gross profit contribution is about 8,000 yuan. Xiaopeng Automobile's services and other revenue, including the driver assistance system XPILOT, recorded revenue of 260 million yuan in the third quarter of last year.
It is worth mentioning that the rise in the cost of upstream raw materials and the decline of domestic subsidies have brought about fluctuations in the price of the whole vehicle. On the last day of last year, Tesla China announced that the price of the domestic Model 3 rear wheel drive version increased by 10,000 yuan, and the domestic Model Y rear wheel drive version increased by 21,100 yuan, and no longer enjoyed subsidies.
