On January 7, local time, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued a statement welcoming the Ethiopian government's announcement of amnesty for some detainees.
In his statement, Guterres called on all parties to build on this "crucial step of confidence-building" to achieve a cessation of hostilities and a sustained ceasefire, and to initiate a credible and inclusive process of national dialogue and reconciliation.
Guterres said he would continue to engage actively with all stakeholders to assist Ethiopia in ending the conflict and restoring peace and stability.
In addition, Guterres said he looked forward to substantial improvements in humanitarian aid access in areas affected by the conflict for a year.
On the same day, the Ethiopian government announced amnesty for some of the opposition and senior officials of the Tigray People's Liberation Front, saying that "the key to lasting unity is dialogue, and Ethiopia will make unremitting efforts to this end". (CCTV reporter Xu Dezhi)
