Rummenigge talks about working with Hoeness: Bayern's interests are paramount, and there will always be compromises in "marriage"

On January 5, 2019 , former Bayern board chairman Rummenigge, who celebrates his 70th birthday today, said he has always valued Bayern's interests.

Rummenigge: "Hoeness is a loud-voiced doer and a passionate fighter in the club. He always inspires me and demands on me, first as a team-mate, then as a manager, and finally as a shared responsibility for the club. ”

"Over the years, the two of us have also been representatives of the Bavarian culture of conflict from time to time, but as Schwarzwald's own Uli and from Westphalia, I have always been able to agree: you know, there is no 'marriage' without compromise. For both of us, Bayern's interests always come first. ”

Rummenigge recalls that in the 1970s he and Hoeness were "roommates and partners in double beds", stressing that without Hoeness, Bayern Munich would not have the uniqueness and independence it has today.

In the interview, Rummenigge also talked about an anecdote from his early years: it was a Friday night before bayern's second match with Hoeness, where he went to Hoeness's room and saw the latter sitting on the bed with a large pile of books, which he was signing a book he had published about the World Cup, which had been a huge success at the time and had been printed twice.

"I asked Hoeness if it would be annoying to sign so many books, and he replied: 'Not at all', after all, he gets a mark for every book he signs,' said Rummenigge. I reckon he signed 2,000 books that night. ”

Rummenigge joked that he guessed that the generous autograph reward also "inspired" Hoeness: "The next day we beat Hertha Berlin 2-0 and Uli scored a 2-0 goal. ”
