Forum | Shangdao's wealth and wisdom, Sangzi feelings, innovative spirit... Scholars talked about the historical enlightenment of modern Ningbo merchants

As a remarkable group in the development of modern and modern society, Ningbo businessmen have always been an important research topic in the academic community. Recently, the Ningbo Merchants (Ningbo Merchants) Research Center of Shanghai University, the National Social Science Foundation of Ningbo University major project: "Research on the Collection and Collation of Historical Materials of Modern Ningbo Shangbang", and the Ningbo Museum (NingboBang Museum) jointly held an academic seminar on "Changing Times: Ningbo Merchants, Hometown Organizations and Regional Social Changes in Modern China". More than 100 scholars from Tsinghua University, the University of Hong Kong, Fudan University, Shanghai University, as well as descendants of Ningbo businessmen, attended the conference through "cloud video".

Long Denggao, professor of the Institute of Economics of Tsinghua University and director of the Center for Chinese Business Studies at Tsinghua University, Li Peide, professor of the University of Hong Kong, distinguished professor of Central China Normal University and vice president of the Institute of Asian Studies, and Yu Shouming, grandson of Yu Qiaqing and executive director of Hong Kong Ideal Group, respectively made keynote speeches on the topics of "Ningbo Businessmen from a Comparative Perspective", "Cultural Identity and Historical Memories of Hong Kong Ningbo Businessmen: An Analysis Based on Cases", and "My Grandfather Yu Qiaqing". From the perspective of macro history and comparison, Professor Long Denggao sorted out the development context of Ningbo businessmen and explained the connotation of "Ningbo Gang". Professor Li Peide discussed how Hong Kong Ningbo people can become "gangs" from the aspects of cultural identity, regional influence and industry development, and perceived the actions and contributions of Ningbo businessmen in the turning and changing shanghai-Hong Kong-overseas business network. From the perspective of the descendants of the Ningbo Shang Gang, Yu Shouming talked about the family's memory and understanding of the connotation of entrepreneurship.

Several scholars shared new findings and new perspectives from their research from different perspectives. Professor Zhang Shouguang of the School of History and Culture of Southwest University and the Chongqing Center for the Study of the Great Rear Area of the Chinese War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression examined the evolution of the Ningbo Gang during the all-out War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression; Tao Shuimu, Professor of the Department of History of Hangzhou Normal University, discussed the Shanghai business community and refugee relief after the 918 Incident; Sun Shangen, professor of the Department of History of the School of Humanities and Media of Ningbo University, elaborated on the development of the Ningbo Gang and local education in modern times, according to Carles Braso, a Spanish scholar from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya Through a case study by Wang Qiyu and Dafeng Dyeing and Weaving Factory, Broggi discusses the industrialization of Ningbo merchants. In addition, more than ten scholars from Nanjing University, Anhui University, Ningbo University, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, Shanghai Municipal Archives, And Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce conducted academic exchanges.

Li Yao, deputy director of the Business Gang Committee of the China Business History Society and director of the Ningbo BusinessMen Research Center of Shanghai University, believes that in recent years, the research of Ningbo businessmen in the academic community has become more diversified, showing the characteristics of "feelings and temperature". The research content involved in this academic seminar ranges from the Tang and Song dynasties to modern times, and involves finance, manufacturing, charity, law, family, life history and many other aspects, reflecting the development process and humanistic spirit of Ningbo Bang and the times.

Professor Zhu Yinggui of the Department of History of Fudan University pointed out that the academic seminar will elevate the research of Ningbo businessmen to a broader field. As a rising business gang, the Ningbo gang has developed rapidly and suppressed other business gang groups; they not only carry the traditional business intelligence, but also have deep Sangzi feelings, excellent innovative spirit, and excellent group autonomy. In today's new historical period, deepening the study of the Ningbo Gang is of far-reaching significance for the development of the national, ethnic and regional economies.

This conference is the second academic symposium since the establishment of the Ningbo Merchants (Ningbo Merchants) Research Center of Shanghai University. Shanghai Ningbo Merchants (Ningbo Merchants) Research Center was established in December 2020, aiming to explore and sort out the literature of Ningbo businessmen at home and abroad, carry forward the entrepreneurial spirit of Ningbo businessmen's patriotic dedication and entrepreneurship to serve the country, and provide more historical enlightenment for the integrated social and economic development of the Yangtze River Delta. Since its establishment, the center has carried out a number of contents: promoting the editing and publication of the "Ningbo Merchants Research Series", holding the "Modern Ningbo Merchants' Oral Materials Collection" activity, and holding a symposium on the descendants of Shanghai Ningbo businessmen.
