Liverpool will not go on loan wijnaldum Salah has no other better option at the moment

With the opening of the January transfer window and the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool will face a huge challenge. In Anfieldwatch, Liverpool journalist David Lynch answered some of the fans' questions.

On whether Liverpool will sign players in the winter window

Liverpool's attitude is quite firm, that they are not going to sign players in the winter window, I believe them. Unless there is a target of their long-term concern that can suddenly be brought in, but players like the type of players that Liverpool focus on, they are usually not sold in the middle of the season. That means Liverpool may be committed to cleaning up players at certain positions, but they're not in a hurry to do so.

On how the Africa Cup of Nations will affect Liverpool

You'd hope Liverpool don't get too much affected by the Africa Cup of Nations and their schedule isn't that tight. If the national team of the players participating in the African Cup of Nations is out early, they will even welcome back their players earlier. If something goes wrong, they may seek to sign a player contingency, but you can't sign a player for two games throughout the season.

On whether Liverpool will lend players in the winter window

It was strange to me that no club had taken action against Nat Phillips last summer, but after Phillips played well against Milan, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of clubs changed their stance. In my opinion, Phillips is a Premier League-level defender, although he doesn't look up to Liverpool's standards.

With O'Bonnar injured, West Ham are expected to consider signing Phillips and I feel it's a deal for all parties. Whether there are clubs eager to bring in Origi remains to be seen, and it is the only deal that could give Liverpool access to the transfer market.

On whether Liverpool will consider going to loan veteran Wijnaldum

I don't think that's going to happen. With injuries lessening, Liverpool currently have good reserves in midfield. Moreover, Wijnaldum clearly wants to go to a club where he is guaranteed to get playing time. If returned, Wijnaldum's appearance would be behind Thiago, and I believe that in order for Curtis Jones and Elliott to grow more, Klopp will give these two players a lot of playing time.

On whether Connert will be reused in the second half of the season

I think Klopp will stick with the centre-back combination of Van Dijk and Matip as long as the latter can stay healthy. However, Liverpool sometimes have to make some rotations, so Conat will still get a certain amount of playing time.

On the renewal of Salah's contract

It's hard to give insightful analysis of Salah's renewal. When you haven't heard much about renewal negotiations, it's rarely a good sign because it means a fundamental disagreement over the length of the renewal and annual salary. However, we also recently heard Klopp say that he is optimistic about Salah's contract extension.

This would give fans confidence and also signal that Salah has no other, more attractive option in the current situation. La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barca are no longer what they used to be, Paris Saint-Germain are in a smaller league, Juve are struggling and Bayern may not be willing to spend huge sums of money.
