How beautiful is the diplomat Gong Peng? After a year of widowhood, she remarried Qiao Guanhua, and foreign journalists went crazy about her charm

For the story of cooking wine, please pay attention to Cui Lili

In 1914, a bright pearl was left in yokohama City overseas. At that time, the baby girl who was still swaddled was just a cute and pink appearance, and no one knew that her future would shine with the light of the world.

The pearl that was originally left in a foreign land was Gong Peng, the first female diplomat of new China, and when she was born, her loving parents named her Gong Weihang.

As for why Gong Peng could not be born in the land of her hometown, she has lived a displaced life with her parents since she was a child, and it must be told from the extraordinary life of her father Gong Zhenzhou.

Although the Gong family is full of talents, it is not a prominent family. When Gong Zhenzhou was born, the Gong family was still poor, and when he ran away from his hometown of Hefei, Anhui Province, with great ambition, he only had one yuan to lean on.

Firm faith guided him like a beacon, allowing the young boy Lang Gong Zhenzhou to hike nearly 1,000 kilometers to Baoding to apply for the Army Accelerated School.

Gong Zhenzhou studied hard and eventually graduated with honors from the artillery major and became the brigade commander of the 35th Brigade. As a result, the once unknown people started their own ups and downs and meaningful life journey from a poor boy.

Gong Zhenzhou, like countless rising generations in the land of China at that time, participated in the League, followed Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and threw himself into the Xinhai Revolution, trying to find a bright road for China's future.

Gong Peng's father, Gong Zhenzhou

The road to revolution has always been bumpy, and in 1913, the second year after the founding of the Republic of China, the fruits of the Xinhai Revolution were stolen by Yuan Shikai. With Yuan Shikai's restoration of the imperial system, the members of the League after the failure of the Second Revolution were subjected to crazy retaliation by Yuan Shikai.

In order to preserve his strength, Gong Zhenzhou, who was wanted by the whole country, fled to Japan with his wife and daughter. In 1914, the second year of hiding in Japan, Gong Peng was born and became Gong Zhenzhou's second daughter.

Gong Peng's birth is revolutionary and tragic, but she is like a hopeful light, bringing joy and emotion to this floating home in a chaotic world.

When Gong Peng was two years old, Yuan Shikai fell, the crisis in Gong Zhenzhou was lifted, the family was able to return to China, and the young Gong Peng only set foot on the land of the motherland for the first time. Naturally, as a young child, she did not understand that she had already experienced a great escape with her parents.

After returning to China, Gong Zhenzhou was invited by Sun Yat-sen to serve as the commander-in-chief of Humen Fortress and galloped through the wind and rain for a period of time. Later, this cadre who grew up in the fire of the artillery abandoned all glory, returned to the crowd of people, and lived a poor but warm life with his family.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai was full of songs and dances, and many prosperity, Gong Peng came into contact with the most advanced ideas and the latest strange things in the world at that time. Coupled with her father's words and deeds to her since childhood, Gong Peng grew into a beautiful girl who was both knowledgeable and open-minded.

Gong Peng

In 1933, Gong Peng was 19 years old, just in the good years of youth. In this year, Gong Peng bid farewell to his parents and went to Beijing to become a new student in the history department of Yenching University.

Yenching University was born during the May Fourth Movement, and since its existence, it has forged an indissoluble relationship with the student patriotic democracy movement. Gong Peng was deeply influenced by patriotic ideas in school, and after two years of study, she seemed to have become a student representative holding high the patriotic banner.

As the pace of Japan's invasion of China drew closer, on December 9, 1935, the Beiping Students' Federation organized nearly 10,000 students from colleges and universities to participate in the anti-Japanese national salvation parade, known in history as the "129 Movement". In this parade, Yenching University, the mainstay of patriotism, sent 6 brigades of up to 90 people per team, and Gong Peng was one of the six captains.

Shortly after joining the 129 Movement, in 1936, Gong Peng joined the Communist Party of China, beginning her staunch communist cause.

During her time at the school, Gong Peng first showed her future diplomatic style, and she and her sister Gong Pusheng (the first ambassador of new China to Ireland) and many people of insight talked with many people of insight at the home of Edgar Snow, a lecturer in the Department of Journalism at Yenching University, and discussed strategies for saving the dead and trying to survive. It was at the suggestion of Mr. Snow that Gong Pusheng and Gong Peng hosted a foreign press conference at Yanda Linhuxuan. Fluent English and passionate Q&A made the foreign press conference hosted by Chinese students very successful.

In 1937, when Gong Peng was about to graduate, he saw a book published by Snow on a westward journey, "The Red Star Shines on China", which was a documentary essay compiled by Mr. and Mrs. Snow in the shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region, the revolutionary base area in northwest China.

Edgar Snow

Seeing the smiles of the people of northern Shaanxi in the photo, Gong Peng was greatly moved, and translated the English version of Snow's "Red Star Shines on China" into Chinese and circulated it among the student groups.

Gong Peng's heart has always been pulled by a place called Yan'an, and half a year after graduation, she hid from her family, took Hong Kong with several classmates, and went straight to Yan'an.

Although Gong Peng concealed her whereabouts from her father Gong Zhenzhou, Gong Zhenzhou, who knew her daughter, obviously understood where she was. Gong Zhenzhou instructed Gong Peng: "What kind of road you choose, you must persist in walking." If you want to turn back, the door of your home will not open towards you! ”

Gong Peng followed the ideal path smoothly, and soon after arriving in Yan'an, he became the first batch of students of the Marxist-Leninist Academy. After spending half a year in Yan'an, Gong Peng's talents came to the fore as an English translator for the revolutionary leader Mao Zedong.

In September of the same year, Gong Peng was assigned to the Taihang Mountains as an editor for Xinhua Daily. Coincidentally, on the way to her destination, she met Peng Dehuai again. The two talked happily along the way, and Peng Dehuai appreciated this talented and quick-witted girl, leaving her to work as a secretary at the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army in the Taihang Mountains.

Everything was the best arrangement in heaven, because of this unexpected job change, Gong Peng met her first husband, Liu Wenhua. Liu Wenhua was a learned talent who studied in Germany for 8 years and joined the Communist Party of China after returning to China, where he also worked in the secretariat.

A pair of talented women with equal knowledge and the same pursuit of the same in this way promised to live under the Taihang Mountain, carved each other's names on a poplar tree, and became husband and wife.

In life, Gong Peng and Liu Wenhua are loving couples with hearts and minds, and at work, they are comrades-in-arms who take care of each other, and they thought that they would work together to look forward to the coming of a better life, but they did not expect that the disaster would come so hastily.

Just 30 days after the marriage, it was the time when the newlyweds were mixing the oil, and Gong Peng received the task of being assigned by his superiors to work in Chongqing.

When receiving the letter of appointment, the two generals in the base area speculated that the central government should not know that Gong Peng had just married, so they told her that if she did not want to leave her husband, they could consult with the central government.

But thinking of the tense situation in China at that time, Gong Peng still refused the kindness of the two generals, believing that the country was above the family, and she decided to resolutely obey the organization's arrangements.

Liu Wenhua looked at his beloved wife and advised her that she "should go without any worries", and they met every ten days to send letters to each other to understand each other's current situation.

They looked forward to the next reunion, and when Gong Peng crossed the layers of blockades and reached Chongqing under artillery fire, Liu Wenhua's thoughts were already attached to the letter and quietly waiting for her.

Gong Peng meets in Geneva, Switzerland

In Chongqing, Gong Peng was both Zhou Enlai's diplomatic secretary and translator and spokesman for the delegation, working with her husband in the far north to fight for his ideals.

The young Gong Peng has shown the charm of a detached and beautiful appearance, and she is circling among foreign journalists, witty and responsive, and her answers are flowing.

Gong Peng's daughter Qiao Songdu said of her mother: "An American friend recalled that among the people he contacted in Chongqing at that time, the most impressive people were Zhou Enlai's assistants Gong Peng and Wang Bingnan. He said that Gong Peng was brilliant, generous and free-spirited, and that talking to her was not restrained, and even changed his original impression of the Communists to some extent. Speaking of her mother, Epstein, an international friend, said that her charisma was indeed an attractive aspect, but more importantly, foreign journalists could hear many events and truths from her. ”

Gong Peng was the proud son of heaven in that era, she was known as "a flower of diplomacy", and many foreign journalists were impressed by her charm and went crazy for her, but stopped at her too dazzling light and discouraged, after all, the goddess has always been worshipped.

In 1940, Gong Peng (second from the left) was in Chongqing

In the war years, it was difficult to get together, and the young couple who got married and separated had not seen their lover for more than a year. But the ten-day letter became the emotional bond between the two, so that they still deeply cared about each other in a foreign land.

In mid-1942, Gong Peng was sick with illness. Her physical discomfort, coupled with the fact that her husband Liu Wenhua's letters did not arrive as scheduled, made her physically and mentally exhausted. Just as she was speculating about why her husband's letter was late, the bad news of her father Gong Zhenzhou's death in Guilin came and left her heartbroken.

In fact, Zhou Enlai had already received the news of Liu Wenhua's sacrifice one step ahead. In May 1942, when the Japanese army swept the Taihang Mountains, Liu Wenhua died of sudden appendicitis and no medicine during the counterattack against the enemy troops.

Because Gong Peng was sick and had just lost her father, Zhou Enlai was afraid that she would not be able to withstand the blow, so he concealed the news of Liu Wenhua's sacrifice.

But the paper wrapped can't hold the fire, Liu Wenhua has lost the appointment several times, and they have telepathy in their hearts, and Gong Peng thought of the possibility that he didn't want to believe the most.

Sure enough, Gong Peng did not wait for her husband's letter, leaving her with only the last oral suicide note: "My wife, I am thinking of her." If I have an accident, let her marry someone. As long as she does not break away from the revolution, she will always be worthy of me..."

In a short period of time, Gong Peng lost her husband and father, and the two most important men in her life left her, and for a time, she was immersed in sadness and could not extricate herself.

Later, Gong Peng published "Commemorating Wenhua" in the newspaper, and she wrote with deep affection: "I love the barren land of the Taihang Mountains, it is nourished by the blood of our dearest comrades, it witnesses the happiest period of my life, and it contains the bones of my husband..."

The work will continue, with the thought of her husband Liu Wenhua and his unfulfilled wishes, Gong Peng continues to struggle in the front line strongly.

When you're serious about yourself, everything is the best arrangement. In the winter of 1942, a man named Qiao Guanhua came to Chongqing, and although he did not know Gong Peng, he seemed to have come for Gong Peng again.

Like most of the love of that era, they knew each other because of their work, and they fell in love with each other because of the sympathy of fighting side by side.

Although they loved each other, the shy two did not dare to take the initiative to break through the layer of window paper. Until Qiao Guanhua caused intestinal perforation due to excessive fatigue, Gong Peng thought of her husband Liu Wenhua, who died of appendicitis. Perhaps to make up for the regret in her heart, or perhaps because of her heartache for Qiao Guanhua, she took care of him in every detail and meticulously until she was healed.

Qiao Guanhua and Gong Peng

Seeing Gong Peng's silent efforts, Qiao Guanhua was also deeply moved, but the word "love" was so difficult to open. The way the two twisted made Qiao Guanhua's good friend Feng Yidai and his wife anxious, and simply broke the layer of window paper for them.

Finally, in September 1943, the two met for nearly a year and married, and the person with the broken intestine finally found his sweetheart. Mao Zedong praised Gong Peng and Qiao Guanhua, saying that they were "born beautiful and double swallows, and a thousand miles of marriage are tied together."

Soon after Gong Peng and Qiao Guanhua married, they ushered in the crystallization of love, and the second eldest son, Qiao Zonghuai, was born in the shelling. Because of his busy work, Xiao Zonghuai was placed in a cage at the entrance of the Zhou Mansion, and whoever had time would help bring it.

Unlike Liu Wenhua's gathering less and more, Gong Peng and Qiao Guanhua have not been separated almost since they met. They worked hand in hand and collaborated in common areas, participating in and witnessing many important historical moments.

After the founding of New China, Gong Peng served as the first director of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and at this time she was only 35 years old, and she was already the only woman among the cadres at the level of the department at that time.

Gong Peng has been in the position of director of the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 14 years, and has participated in many important meetings and negotiations with her husband Qiao Guanhua, which has made great contributions to enhancing the diplomatic image of New China.

But in 1970, Gong Peng was only 56 years old, and an illness ended her not yet old life.

Three years after Gong Peng's death, Zhou Enlai was still sad and nostalgic: Gong Peng was an excellent woman, and no one could replace her.

As Zhou Enlai said, no one can replace Gong Peng, and her light will be forever remembered by history. Although it has been only half a century, Gong Peng has left a strong mark of life in this world, and her charm will never fade.
