Speed skating is a racing sport performed on ice with an ice knife as a tool. It refers to the skating competition for the purpose of racing within a specified distance, referred to as speed skating, which is an official event of the Winter Olympic Games.

At the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, speed skating was listed as an official event, but only four minor events were set up for men from 500 meters to 10,000 meters. Since the 1960 Winter Olympics in Valley, the women's program has been established. At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada, the number of men's and women's speed skating events increased to five. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, the men's and women's team pursuits were also listed as official speed skating events. At the last Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the men's and women's collective departures also entered the official competition.

There are 14 speed skating events at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
