The results of the 2021 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), the world's largest wine competition, were announced today. China has won a record-high 156 medals to date, with one dry white wine aged in oak barrels from Beijing winning the "Platinum Award" and four single-variety wines winning the Gold Award.

Dry white first to win "platinum"
The 2018 vintage of "A8 Chardonnay" at Zhangyu Aifeibao International Winery won the Platinum Medal at this year's Decanter World Wine Competition. This is the highest award that a dry white wine from China has won so far at the Decanter World Competition.
This white wine from Beijing's Miyun County was hand-picked and aged in oak barrels for more than 6 months, and the judging judges of the competition considered it "thick and elegant", especially appreciating the use of oak barrels: "With lemon, lime and light floral notes, green papaya, mango, butter and white peach flavors, the oak flavor is more like a spectator than a protagonist".
Last year, this Chardonnay's 2017 vintage won a silver medal at DWWA, showing consistent quality.
In this year's competition, its 2018 vintage won the Gold Award in the first round of blind tasting, and then in the second round of judging, it stood out from the similar gold medal wines in the Asian division, and finally won the Platinum Award (equivalent to the previous "Regional Award").
In addition, three dry white wines in China have won the Silver Award, all of which are Chardonnay aged in oak barrels, namely the "Xiaofeng" Chardonnay 2017 vintage from Ningxia Helanshan Winery, and the "Rare" Chardonnay 2019 vintage and the "T20" Chardonnay 2019 vintage from Xinjiang Yanqi Tiansai Winery.
"The level of winemaking in China is becoming more and more mature, and the quality improvement of white wines is particularly outstanding." Professor Li Demei, a columnist at the DecanterChina.com and an authoritative expert on Chinese wine, said.
"Winemakers are no longer obsessed with (excessive) oak flavors, which is in line with one of our consumer surveys: consumers who have no wine expertise at all (without any form of wine education) have low acceptance of oak flavors in wine. Winemakers began to interact with the consumer market and gradually developed some of their own styles. At present, in xinjiang Yanqi basin, Ningxia Helan Mountain foothills, Hebei Huailai, Shandong Peninsula and other production areas, there are some excellent wines and wineries. ”
Although red wine is still dominant in the current Chinese wine consumption market, Professor Li pointed out that in fact, before 1996, white wine had an absolute dominant position in the market. As wine consumption returns to rationality, more consumers are exploring the charm of white wine: "Chinese food is relatively suitable for white wine in terms of flavor and dining style. ”
Four gold medals
Master sommelier Ronan Sayburn, who served as one of the co-judges of the competition, praised China as one of the "outstanding" producing regions in this competition.
A total of four Chinese wines have won gold awards this year, all from the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain in Ningxia, demonstrating the strength of the region as An emerging boutique wine region in China.
The 2019 vintage of The Round Winery's "Little Munson Sweet White Wine" was favored by the jury experts for its "rich tropical fruit flavor and rich and seductive finish".
The 2016 vintage of "1266 Cabernet Sauvignon" by Great Wall Talent Winery, "pure and fresh, mature but without fatigue", was praised by the judges as "an outstanding work from China".
The organic winery Redelion performed well in this competition, winning two consecutive gold medals. Its 2019 vintage of "Lane Treasure Syrah", produced in the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain, won the praise of the judges for its "balanced and harmonious, delicate oak flavor".
The winery's 2019 vintage, "Marselan 1961", won the last gold medal with its complex fragrance of "elegance and excellence", demonstrating The strength of Marselan as a "potential stock" of Chinese characteristics.

A total of 156 wines from China won medals in DWWA 2021, the current best result achieved by Chinese wines at the Decanter World Competition, much higher than last year's 120, including 1 Platinum, 4 Gold, 36 Silver and 115 Bronze. The regional medal table is as follows:

The Ningxia region once again grabbed the top spot in the medal table with 66 award-winning wines (4 gold, 14 silver, 48 bronze), and the dry red wine based on Cabernet Sauvignon was particularly outstanding.
In addition, local wineries are further exploring the possibility of creating fine dry reds in the sunny eastern foothills of Helan Mountain, with Marselan, Dragon Ball, Syrah, and even Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Marbec starting to take their place in the medal table.
In the more humid and mild climate of Shandong, in addition to dry red wines, a number of high-quality sweet wines have emerged in this year's competition, with five small Munsons from Qingdao, Penglai and Weihai winning medals, and two sparkling wines using champagne varieties (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) winning bronze medals.
The Northeast Ice Wine, which has performed prominently in previous competitions, has also played a stable role this year, with a total of five North Ice Red and Weddell Ice Wines from Liaoning and Jilin winning silver awards.
Decanter World Wine Competition 2021
This year marks the 18th year of the Decanter World Wine Competition, with 18,093 wines from 56 countries and regions competing.
A 170-member jury, consisting of 44 wine masters and 11 master sommeliers, conducted three blind tastings of the participating wines.
The first round of the selection of gold, silver and bronze three awards, the second round of the gold medal wines according to the region and type of grouping again, the selection of the region's best wines among the same kind of wine, giving the platinum award. The third round of blind tasting was held among the Platinum Award-winning wines, and the wine that stood out was the highest prize of the year, the Best in Show.
In this year's DWWA, less than 1% of the wines won the Platinum Award, and only 0.28% of the wines won the "best of the competition".
