Without amnesty, Ms. Park, 70, would still be in jail for 17 years before eventually being released at the age of 87.

According to the South Korean website "Edaily", Park Geun-hye is receiving treatment at Samsung Seoul Hospital, and the release process will be carried out in the ward, without having to return to prison. When the release time comes, the prison guards will issue her a pardon certificate, and the 5 police officers stationed in the ward will be evacuated, and the pardon procedure will be completed. Subsequently, under the former Presidential Treatment Act, personnel from the Presidential Security Service took over Park Geun-hye's security work.
However, due to Park Geun-hye's deteriorating health, she is likely not to be discharged immediately. Her lawyer has said Ms. Park will be hospitalized until early February 2022.

On December 24, south Korea's Ministry of Justice announced that it would grant amnesty to Park Geun-hye in order to promote national unity. South Korean President Moon Jae-in expressed hope that the move would be an opportunity to usher in a new era of unity and reconciliation, and said that Park Geun-hye's health had deteriorated significantly in the past five years in prison, hoping that opponents would understand. Park Geun-hye responded on the same day that she was pardoned and expressed her "deep gratitude" to Moon Jae-in.
