The lawsuit dates back to 2013, when a group of retail store employees sued Apple for paying for the time spent inspecting employees' backpacks and safety devices. The case has passed the Ninth Circuit and the California Supreme Court.

In the Supreme Court ruling, Apple argued that employees could have left devices such as mobile phones in their homes to avoid being searched. But the court rejected that claim and criticized Apple, with judges saying apple portrayed the iPhone as an integral part of its customers' lives in advertising campaigns, but required its employees to keep their phones at home, contradictory arguments.

Eventually, Apple stopped backpack searches in 2015 and offered to pay employees $30 million this year to settle the case. Now, the solution has finally been approved by the court, and the nearly eight-year dispute has finally been settled, and 14,683 current and former employees who worked at Apple's 52 Stores in California between July 2009 and December 2015 will be compensated.
