In the spy circle, double espionage and even triple espionage are quite common, but there are very few spies with five identities at the same time. During the Republic of China, an agent, as a person, shouldered a five-fold identity, in addition to the real secret identity of the CCP, there were also the identities of the Central Command, the Military Command, the Japanese Puppet and the Qinghong Gang, which can be described as the strongest pretender. He is Yuan Shu.

Skillfully develop intelligence sources, one person and five identities
Yuan Shu, born in 1911 in Puchun, Hubei Province, studied in Japan in 1929, and after returning to China, served as a member of the Standing Committee of the General League of Left-wing Culture of China and founded "Literary and Art News". He has multiple identities - military command, central unification, Qinghong gang, Japanese pseudo, but his secret identity is the real CCP Special Branch.
In October 1931, Yuan Shu joined the Communist Party of China and immediately transferred to the work of Teco. In the spring of 1932, through the relationship of his cousin Jia Botao, Yuan Shu met Wu Xingya, the director of the Shanghai Municipal Social Bureau and the head of the Central Unification, and broke into the Central Unification. Later, he was introduced by Wu Xingya and became a reporter for the Xinsheng News Agency, so that he could attend the press conference of the Nanjing government, during which he met Eiichi Iwai, deputy consul of the Japanese Consulate in Shanghai.
At that time, China and Japan were negotiating the issue of currency exchange rates and tariffs, which naturally became a hot commodity in the press. Because Yuan Shu had a rock well channel and the news was fast and accurate, this "foreign-related" reporter immediately became a celebrity. After a while, Iwai began to pay Yuan Shu a monthly "communication fee" of 200 yuan, so that he became a Japanese intelligence officer. Naturally, this was approved by the head of the ccp's underground party – becoming a triple spy. Soon, Iwai arranged for Yuan Shu to go to Japan.
Eiichi Iwai
After returning to China, Yuan Shu joined the Qinghong Gang in April 1937 in order to strengthen his own protection and develop intelligence sources. In June 1937, Pan Hannian returned to Shanghai as the director of the Eighth Route Army's office in Shanghai. From then on, until he went to the Liberated Areas in 1946, under the direction of Pan Hannian, Yuan Shu successfully performed an excellent intelligence war.
When the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out, Dai Kasa could not find anyone who was familiar with the Japanese issue and had considerable Japanese relations, and Du Yuesheng reminded him that there was a Japanese student named Yuan Shu who had a good relationship with Eiichi Iwai, vice consul of the Japanese consulate. Yuan Shu asked Pan Hannian to agree immediately. Dai Kasa assigned Yuan Shu two tasks: one was to collect intelligence from the Japanese side, and the other was to insist on staying in Shanghai, no matter how the situation changed. In this way, Yuan Shu has one more identity: military unification, plus the central unification, the Qinghong Gang, the Japanese pseudo-identity, and the real secret identity of the CCP, is a five-fold identity. This is also the most versatile spy in the history of Chinese intelligence.
Obtain intelligence on the southward expansion of the Japanese army to provide strong support for the deployment of Soviet troops
During the "August 13" Songhu War of Resistance in 1937, Yuan Shu put his life and death on the line, disguised himself as a Japanese student, crossed the battle line, and went deep into the Japanese position to reconnoiter, providing vital military intelligence and enabling our side to avoid great losses.
After Shanghai became an isolated island, Yuan Shu was ordered (Pan Hannian's order, ostensibly Dai's order) to stay. In the name of major general of the military command, he set up a secret operation group to punish the invaders and traitors, and was rewarded by the Military Command Bureau. The most successful of these was the destruction of the Japanese naval munitions depot in Hongkou by the operations team. To this end, the military commander gave Yuan Shu a great contribution.
After the fall of Shanghai in 1937, Iwai Eiichi returned to Shanghai and established a Japanese secret service "Special Investigation Team", of which Yuan Shu naturally became a member. Later, according to Pan Hannian's instructions, in fact, it was the specific deployment and study approval of the central government, yuan Shu proposed to Iwai to establish the headquarters of the "Xingya Nation-building Movement". The headquarters of the "Xingya Nation-Building Movement" was established in November 1939 at the Iwai Mansion.

In the name of Iwai, Pan Hannian established such an institution, in addition to covering a radio station, but more importantly, for the sake of the overall situation of the international anti-fascist war. At that time, under the attack of the Japanese and the diehards, the task of concealing the work on the front was even more arduous, and it was necessary to penetrate deep into the enemy's interior in a more flexible way. Having Yuan Shu enter the circle of Japanese activities is more beneficial to obtaining intelligence. Moreover, because Yan'an is far from the intelligence center Shanghai, it is eager to grasp the movements of the Japanese base camp and the subtle relations and changes between japan, Wang, and Chiang Kai-shek, which collude and contradict each other. So Yuan Shu used this agency to send a large amount of intelligence to Yan'an.
At the beginning of 1942, arranged by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yuan Shu was invited to visit Japan as a representative of the "construction movement". Haruyoshi saburo Nono, head of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the protagonist in organizing the visit. Yoshisaburo revealed to Yuan that Japan's current national policy is to prepare to lure Chiang Kai-shek and establish a greater East Asian co-prosperity sphere with the Japanese state as the main body, and the Japanese army has determined the strategic plan for advancing south. This news shocked Yuan Shu. Yuan Shu gathered and analyzed intelligence from all sides and determined that the southward advance was already a strategic decision that the Japanese army had made unswervingly. Pan Hannian immediately reported this information to Yan'an.
After the outbreak of the European War, the Soviet Union was always worried about being attacked on its backs. After having the intelligence to determine the southward advance of the Japanese army, the Soviet Union was relieved and bold to transfer hundreds of thousands of troops from the Far East to the Western Front.
It was not until a year after the Liberated Areas that the enemy discovered his true identity
From 1937 to the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Yuan Shu never had any accidents, which is undoubtedly inseparable from his wisdom and outstanding activities. Later, Yuan Shu held a series of pseudo-positions, such as the head of the Qingxiang Political Work Group, the director of the Jiangsu Provincial Education Department, the Qingxiang Commissioner, and the pseudo-security commander. His intelligence work was getting older.
In early 1945, Yuan Shu resigned from the post of pseudo-director of education, leaving only the title of a Shanghai senator. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Yuan Shu was appointed commander of the 5th Column of the New Einsatzgruppen of the Loyal Salvation Army and the commander of the 3rd Station directly under the Military Command, and was awarded the rank of lieutenant general. It was not until the following year, in early 1946, that the Kuomintang side learned that Yuan Shu had gone to the Liberated Areas, and could not help but be furious, so "Yuan Shu, a meritorious member of the War of Resistance", immediately became a "traitor of the Communist Party" to the "Communist Party" of the Communist Party. The military commander issued an arrest warrant against Yuan Shu and sent someone to Suzhou to raid his home. After the signing of the "Double Ten" agreement, Yuan Shu withdrew north with his army.
In 1946, Yuan Shu took a photo at the Liaison Department of the Central Bureau of Huaiyin
In 1949, Yuan Shu went to Beijing and transferred to Li Kenong's intelligence department to investigate the movements of Japan and the United States. On November 26, 1987, Yuan Shu died at the age of 76.
