Fast forward to the middle of the 19th century, when Shanghai was only a decade old, and the beginnings of urbanization were still limited to the core area of the concession south of Suzhou Creek and now east of Henan Middle Road. As for the vast area on the north bank of the Suzhou River, the water network is dense, and the traffic is still a traditional Jiangnan idyllic scenery. However, all this has also come to the eve of change.

In 1856, the original Waibaidu Bridge, the Wells Bridge, was completed, and the north bank of the Suzhou River was recognized in the modernization of Shanghai. At present, the hottest Internet celebrity punch card in Shanghai, located at the intersection of Wujin Road in North Sichuan Road, is located in the "8 Lanes of this Tide", which is within the scope of this area.

More than 150 years ago, there was no trace of north Sichuan Road today, and a river called "Through Hongbang" was much more famous at that time. This road was filled in many years later and became part of Wujin Road, which was once the boundary between Shanghai and Baoshan counties, Jiangwan Township of Baoshan County in the north, Gaochang Township in Shanghai County in the south, and "Lane 8 of the Present Tide", which happens to be at the junction of the two, the former is unusual and seems to have been doomed.

At the end of the 1870s, the Ministry of Works built a wooden bridge at the present-day Sichuan Road Bridge, because it was located in the upper reaches of the Waibaidu Bridge, named Li ferry bridge, and the two sides of the road were connected, because the south bank was Sichuan Road, so the north bank road was named "North Sichuan Road", that is, today's Sichuan North Road.

The original North Sichuan Road only reached the south bank of the Hongbang, at the end of the 19th century, the concession authorities extended it to the north, and along the line to compile door numbers, set up patrols, levy taxes, in May 1899, the Shanghai Public Concession completed the last expansion of the boundary, the old target road (into Wujin Road) became its boundary with China, located in the south of the road "Now Chao 8 Lane" area was also officially included in the jurisdiction of the concession.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the "8 Lanes of the Present Tide" area, still on the edge of the city, the relatively empty environment coupled with the low land price, so that some gentlemen and wealthy families chose to build garden villas here, and now the well-protected and repaired Yingchuan Jilu and Shuhong Garden were built during this period. The former is owned by a Guangdong merchant surnamed Chen, while the latter is owned by another Cantonese merchant surnamed Zhao, also known as the Zhao Family Garden. When the Xinhai Revolution broke out in 1911 and Sun Yat-sen arrived in Shanghai from overseas, the Guangdong Hometown Association held a celebration banquet here, and the grandeur of the Rainbow Garden was evident.

After the establishment of the Republic of China, the north Sichuan Road changed rapidly. In the 1910s, North Sichuan Road already had tram lines. In 1922, the reinforced concrete structure of Sichuan Road bridge was officially opened to traffic. Convenient transportation conditions have narrowed the distance between the area and the city center, which has also promoted the construction of residential buildings along North Sichuan Road. A large number of lane houses, including the main part of the "8 Lanes of the Present Tide" and Guangjili, the place where the four major congresses of the Communist Party of China were held, were gradually built during this period.

The convenience of transportation has brought about the gathering of the population, and has also made many industrial and commercial cultural institutions appear in the area around the "8 Lanes of the Present Tide", and to this day, we can still follow the traces of history and peek into the prosperous scene of the Hongkou area in that year.

On the east side of Lane 8 of the "Present Tide", two apartment buildings that are almost connected stand on the east side of Sichuan Road. The original Hongkou Branch building of the Four-Line Savings Association on the north side was completed in the early 1930s by the famous modern Chinese architect Zhuang Jun, and when it was built, the ground floor was used as a branch business office, and the upper floor was a rental apartment, so it was also named Hongkou Apartment.

The south side is located in the northeast corner of the haining intersection of the present-day Sichuan North Road, and the larger narrow building is the former Hongkou branch of the Bank of China, which was completed in 1933 and designed by Lu Qianshou and Wu Jingqi, costing nearly one million.

In addition to the BOC's own use, this six-storey building is also designed with apartment parts for rent, its water, electricity, coal, bathroom and heating are readily available, and a roof garden is built, and the equipment is second to none in Hongkou at that time. The electric clock that the designer hung at the top of the tower became an important symbol of the Hongkou area at that time.

In addition to banks, apartments, and lane residences, the "8 Lanes of the Present Tide" cultural and entertainment venues are also very prosperous. In modern Shanghai, the Hongkou area once gathered dozens of film theaters, which can be called one of the important towns in the Shanghai film screening market. Among them, many of them are around the "8 Lanes of this tide".

In the northeast corner of the Haining intersection of North Sichuan Road, there was a "New Central Theater" that played movies, but also staged dramas and burlesque plays, and was renamed "Haiguang Theater" after the victory of the War of Resistance.

Just over 100 meters further east along Haining Road, on the west side of the Haining intersection of Zhapu Road, the International Cinema (then known as Rongguang Grand Theater), which opened in the early 1930s, was one of the more advanced cinemas in Hongkou. Because it is close to Lu Xun's apartment, the latter has watched 14 movies such as "Luo Gong Spring Color", "Forty-two Neighborhood", "Detective Chen Charlie" and so on.

The cinema has been modernized many times and remains the most popular cinema venue in the area today. On the east side of the same intersection is the Hollywood Grand Theater, which opened in the late 1920s, and has since changed its name several times, changing its name to Victory Cinema after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, but for various reasons, it has been suspended for many years.

The prosperity of film culture in the Hongkou area confirms from one side that the "8 Lanes of the Present Tide" area actively absorbs foreign cultures. Located at the junction of China and the Ocean, many of the residents are Cantonese immigrants, and after entering the 20th century, a considerable number of Japanese expatriates have moved here, and the fusion of multiple cultures has made this area still see a lot of "exotic styles".

Jingling Hall on Kunshan Road was one of the most important chapels in Shanghai in the 1920s, and was originally named Jinglin Hall in honor of missionary Lin Lezhi.

The former Nishi Hongan-ji Temple Shanghai Annex, located near Wujin Road on Zhapu Road, is one of the few surviving Japanese religious buildings in Shanghai today, and the Indian-style floral ornaments on the façade still attract the attention of passers-by. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the building was once used as the Shanghai Peace Museum, carrying the good wishes of all walks of life in Shanghai for peace.

From the scenery of Jiangnan before it was officially included in the concession in the 19th century, to the Haipai style created by the collision of multiple cultures after the 20th century, Yingchuan Jilu, Rainbow Garden, and Public Welfare Square, they constitute today's "8 Lanes of the Present Tide", and they have witnessed the development and changes of the modern Hongkou City, "The 8 Lanes of the Present Tide", the epitome of history, and the portrayal of the city.
