Li Kaixian's "Zhonglu Paintings" has a saying: "Those who do not have the creation of the pen end and the chest have all things in the chest, Mo Zhi is good at (field) masters" and what is "pen end creation"? What about all things? Many people will understand the "pen end creation" as the use of pen and ink, and everything is natural for sketching, which is a great misunderstanding. As stated in the "Zhonglu Paintings", "Those who are not created at the end of the pen and have all things in their chests, Mo Zhi is good at (field) masters" is actually the cultivation and knowledge of the painter. It can also be understood as the need for a poetic and elegant meaning.
Works by Li Ying
There are countless modern painters, but there are very few cultured, cultivated, and relaxed in the chest, and even fewer can poets. The painter Li Ying, indeed, was a poet first, and then painted. Therefore, his paintings have their own aesthetic poetry. In his landscape paintings, we can see the poetry flowing with the lines, and we can also feel the poetry nurtured by the landscapes. The houses and trees in the painting are deposited with poetry. And Li Ying's flower and bird paintings can be described as poems one after another. Its peony blossom group picture is like "poetry dancing in the sea of hearts".
In Li Ying's works, the viewer may think that this is the rhythm and tension of the painter's brush and ink, and will think that Li Ying is a master of technique. However, technique and pen and ink are not the main reasons for the poetry rhyme generated by Li Ying's picture. What moves the viewer is the picture he composes with his poems. Li Ying's paintings are also the pictorial interpretation of Li Kaixian's "Zhonglu Paintings": "Those who are not created at the end of the pen and have all things in their chests, Mo Zhi is good at (field) famous artists".
The painter can be a poet, and his works are self-generating. It breeds naturally. Of course, the effect of the picture is inseparable from the technique and the language of pen and ink. On the contrary, however, those who are skilled in technique and skilled in pen and ink, such as those who cannot write and are not good at poetry, may also be very strong in their work. But it can't naturally reveal that touching poetry. When we look at the works of the poet Li Ying, the reason why we can make them stop, make them look at them for a long time, and make them linger is not simply the rhyme of pen and ink or superb skills, but the natural expression of "painting with poetry".

Li Ying, pen name Zi Xiao, poet and painter.
