In January 2017, during the Spring Festival, the Nanjing City Wall Protection and Management Center received a message from Huang Yougen, a potter in Jingdezhen City, Jiangxi Province.

When Huang Yougen returned to his hometown of Lichuan County for the Chinese New Year, he noticed that the water level of the Litan River in his hometown had plummeted, and a large number of kiln remnants were revealed on both sides of the river. Because of his long-term work in the firing of ceramics, he found that these kilns scattered on the riverbank were quite different from the kilns that fired ceramics. Through many inquiries and investigations, he learned that this area had indeed fired city bricks for the nanjing city wall, and speculated that these kilns were Ming Dynasty brick kilns.

Puzzled, he sent a photograph of the site of the kiln and part of the kiln to the center of the city wall.

At the site of the site, the research team identified the kiln furnace system at the same time, but also found scattered broken bricks at the mouth of the kiln, the top surface of the city bricks can still faintly see the inscriptions of "Jianchang Province" and "Xincheng County", although the brick body has a small amount of sand, but the brick mud is delicate and of good quality...

Since the kiln site group is in the flooded area of the Hongmen Reservoir, after the completion of the floodway gate renovation project of the Hongmen Reservoir, the reservoir will accumulate water again, and the kiln site group will once again sink in the Litan River.

To better protect the brick kiln

The Nanjing City Wall Protection and Management Center decided to implement off-site protection for the brick kilns. After many field investigations and repeated studies, the city wall center dispatched professional technicians to relocate the Lichuan official kiln in accordance with the requirements of cultural relics protection norms.

Badu Village, where the brick kiln site is located, faces water on three sides, and on one side is mountainous, only a long and narrow dirt road in the countryside can be walked. Bad weather conditions and geographical location made the transportation of brick kilns very difficult.

In order to safely transport the remains of the kiln and bricks to the road, the staff specially rented excavators in the local area, widened the dirt road near the kiln site, and brought stones to flatten the dirt road, so as to ensure that the trailer would not fall into the mud when transporting the brick kiln and brick remains.
