Archaeological excavations are somewhat similar to the opening of blind boxes, and without really opening them, they will not know what is inside, so they are also full of unknowns and surprises. Recently, Ukrainian archaeologists made exciting new discoveries while excavating a group of tombs that had been dug for 32 years, and they found a golden sword!
Located near Mount Mamai in Zaporizhia, central Ukraine, the cemetery is the largest group of ancient tombs in the entire territory of Ukraine, and more than 700 tombs, of which about 500 are Scythian, have been excavated in more than 30 years of excavations. And from the archaeological data that has been obtained, the age of this remain can be traced back to the Neolithic Age.
From the 8th century BC to the 3rd century BC, the Scythians were nomadic peoples active in the eastern European steppes and Central Asia, and most of their archaeological findings were concentrated in the territory of present-day Ukraine, where the tombs of nobles were often buried with gold, silver and bronze objects, and the golden swords found this time were enough to indicate that the identity of their tomb owners was not ordinary.
While cleaning up a small tomb, archaeologists found a ditch next to it with a large number of animal bones and pottery fragments buried in it. Along the ditch they found two tombs, one large and one small, both of which had been excavated and covered with robbery holes. The owner of the larger tomb was an elderly man, and his burial goods were looted, leaving only an arrow and a large number of skeletal fragments.
The smaller tomb was disturbed only at the edges, the interior was largely unspoiled, and the owner of the tomb was a young man aged 18 to 20, whose burial goods were quite abundant, gold ornaments, gray pottery, horses, iron axes, bronze arrows and bone arrows were placed around the owner of the tomb, the most striking of which was the golden sword. Judging by the location of the cave, archaeologists believe they almost lost the national treasure.
The hilt, grid and scabbard of the golden sword are well preserved, the plant and flower patterns on the hilt are clearly visible, and the golden sword scabbard still maintains its luster. In addition to the golden sword sheath, the tomb also contains many gold jewelry and jewelry, such as gold earrings, gold pendants, glass beads and red deer tooth necklaces. The tomb is identified as dating back more than 2,500 years and may have belonged to a Scythian warrior.
In the nearly 32 years of excavation history of the Mamai Hill Tomb Group, this year can be described as a fruitful harvest, the tomb of the excavated golden sword is not only of high specification and rich in burial goods, but also has become the earliest known Scythian tomb in Mamai Hill, nearly 200 years earlier than other Scythian tombs excavated before.
However, the current archaeological excavations at Ma mai Shan are facing a serious problem, due to the serious soil erosion in the local area, in 30 years, about 400 meters of coast has been submerged, so local archaeologists are racing against the clock every excavation, hoping to clean up more valuable historical materials before the site is completely destroyed.
