The "Basic Situation of the National Press and Publication Industry in 2020" was recently released by the State Press and Publication Administration. In 2020, a total of 41.751 billion copies (copies, boxes, sheets) of books, periodicals, newspapers, audio-visual products and electronic publications were published nationwide, a decrease of 7.36% compared with 2019.
Among them, 10.374 billion books (zhang), 2.035 billion periodicals, 28.914 billion newspapers, 175 million boxes (zhang) of audio-visual products, and 253 million electronic publications were published, all of which decreased from 2019. In addition, the total print of books, periodicals and newspapers published nationwide was 169.000 billion, a decrease of 8.94% compared with the previous year.
From the perspective of book publishing, in 2020, 213636 new editions of books were published nationwide, with a total print run of 2.322 billion copies (Sheets), a decrease of 4.95% in varieties and a decrease of 7.04% in total prints compared with the previous year. The variety of reprinted books and the total number of prints exceed those of new editions. 275415 kinds of reprinted books, with a total print run of 6.019 billion copies (sheets); compared with the previous year, the varieties were reduced by 2.06% and the total printed number was reduced by 2.87%.
In 2020, a total of 10,192 periodicals were published nationwide, with an average print run of 111.33 million copies, an average print run of 11,200 copies of each period, a total of 2.035 billion copies, a total of 11.640 billion prints, and a total pricing amount of 21.192 billion yuan. Compared with the previous year, except for the increase in the number of species, the rest have declined. A total of 1,810 kinds of newspapers have been published nationwide, with an average print run of 156,929,900 copies, an average of 86,700 copies of each period, a total of 28.914 billion copies, a total of 65.469 billion prints, and a total pricing amount of 36.643 billion yuan. Compared with the previous year, both have decreased.
By the end of 2020, there were 381 audio-visual product publishing units and 316 electronic publication publishing units nationwide. In 2020, a total of 5,312 kinds of phonograms and 121,946,700 boxes (sheets) were published nationwide. Compared with the previous year, the variety decreased by 19.16%, and the number of publications decreased by 27.98%.
In 2020, printing and reproduction (including publication printing, packaging and decoration printing, other printed matter printing, special printing, printing material supply and marketing and reproduction) achieved operating income of 1199.102 billion yuan, down 13.13% compared with the previous year; the total profit was 55.502 billion yuan, a decrease of 28.30%.
In terms of the import and export of publications, in 2020, the country exported a total of 11.4642 million books, newspapers and periodicals, with 47.195 million US dollars. Compared with the previous year, the number decreased by 30.66% and the amount decreased by 36.93%; the cumulative import of books, newspapers and periodicals was 39.7418 million copies ( copies ) , 362.1629 million US dollars. Compared with the previous year, the number decreased by 5.52%, and the amount decreased by 6.08%.
In terms of copyright trade, in 2020, a total of 14,185 copyrights in books, audio-visual products and electronic publications were introduced nationwide, and 13,895 copyrights in books, audio-visual products and electronic publications were exported.
The "Situation" also shows that by the end of 2020, there were 586 publishing houses (including 24 sub-card societies) nationwide, including 219 central-level publishing houses (including 13 sub-card societies) and 367 local publishing houses (including 11 sub-card societies).
