Arctic warming has long been underestimated: the Arctic is warming four times faster than other regions, not twice as fast as previously stated

The Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world — almost a mantra in climate science research. But a team of climate scientists has reported that the figure mentioned in scientific research, advocacy reports, mass media, and even the 2021 UNITED Nations climate assessment is incorrect, obscuring the real impact of global warming on the North. In fact, the arctic is warming at four times the rate of the global average, the researchers say. "Everyone knows that the Arctic is a 'canary' when it comes to climate change."

Peter Jacobs, a climate scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union on Dec. 13, "However, we misreported the numbers by twice as many." This is outrageous. Researchers have long known that the Arctic region is warming faster due to a phenomenon known as the Arctic amplification effect.

Drivers of amplification include an increase in solar heating as dark water replaces reflective sea ice, and the occasional intrusion of heat from the tropics — which is carried to the Arctic by "atmospheric rivers." Jacobs' collaborators include researchers monitoring several influential global temperature records who noticed an acceleration in Arctic warming as they prepared to publish the 2020 average global temperature.
