Yang Jinlong: Breaking the limit of 0.01 mm to color cars

In recent months, Yang Jinlong is working on a water-based coating for automotive painting, exploring new technical parameters through continuous attempts. As a car painting technician, he believes that the color of the car also hides the mystery of the skill of excellence.

At the age of 21, Young Chinese technician Yang Jinlong broke the limit of 0.01 mm and achieved a breakthrough of zero gold medals in the automotive painting project for China at the WorldSkills Competition.

Born in 1994, Yang Jinlong grew up in a rural family in Baoshan, Yunnan Province, where his parents made ends meet on farming. After failing the middle school entrance examination, he held the idea of learning a technique and helping his family reduce the burden as soon as possible, and entered the Longyang District Vocational and Technical School in Baoshan City to learn car maintenance. A year later, through the selection, he came to Hangzhou Technician College to study automotive painting and plastic surgery.

"Although the car painting does not have too much scientific and technological content, it is necessary to minimize the color difference and make the spray car surface smoother, and only with continuous practice can we reach a higher standard." During his school days, Yang Jinlong was obsessed with spray painting technology, and he understood that a good car painting technician is also a "car beautician".

The process of painting is only a few steps, but every detail is crucial: the sanding is not passed, affecting the thickness of the painting; the color grading is not passed, and the repair point has a color difference that affects the perception. "After polishing and grading, the new car should be repaired the same as the new one, and the old car should be repaired as old as the old."

Fortunately, he is willing to endure hardships and study, and every day in the dormitory, canteen, and workshop, he often stays in the training workshop until the early morning in order to overcome a problem. During his time in school, he won the first prize of automobile application and maintenance car painting in Zhejiang Vocational College, the second prize of automobile application and maintenance automobile painting in national vocational colleges, and grew into a professional "dark horse".

In 2012, after Graduating, Yang Jinlong went to work in an auto 4S shop and an auto paint supplier to learn color grading. In April 2014, he returned to Hangzhou and joined the teaching team of Hangzhou Technician College through layers of screening.

He was 22 years old and the youngest teacher at the academy. That year, he accepted an invitation to the 43rd WorldSkills Competition domestic selection competition to challenge the champion.

WorldSkills Competition is the world's highest status, the largest scale, the most influential vocational skills competition, known as the "Olympics of the skill world", every two years, the participants only have one chance to participate in life, and their competitive level represents the world's advanced level of vocational skills development.

The automotive painting project that Yang Jinlong participated in also has very high technical requirements. The spray thickness standard is 0.13 mm, and the allowable error fluctuates up and down only 0.01 mm, 0.01 mm, which is equivalent to about 1/6 of the diameter of a hair.

His training process was extremely hard. Indoor temperatures can reach 40 degrees Celsius in high temperatures and close to 50 degrees Celsius in extreme heat. During training, the skin cannot be exposed to the outside, and the body must be tightly wrapped, so it is sweaty every day, and the wet work clothes will affect the training effect and can no longer be worn. After such a day of training, it was necessary to change seven or eight sets, but Yang Jinlong never cried bitterly.

He regarded the world competition as a college entrance examination in his life, "which can also be regarded as making up for regrets." Yang Jinlong recalled that when he was just studying for vocational high school, he was not favored by the villagers, "They all said that this child did not go to high school and was abolished, which means that he may not be able to become a talent in the future." In order to change his prejudices and prove that he can do it, he strives to pursue the limits of being a craftsman.

In the process of preparing for the battle, Yang Jinlong often had pain in his arm because he held the spray gun for too long, "Sometimes the pain is so painful that he can't sleep, he can't lift it for a few days, and he can only use ice packs to relieve it." To build muscle strength, he lifts dumbbells every day for exercise.

On August 17, 2015, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Chinese youth Yang Jinlong stood on the stage of the WorldSkills Competition, and with his superb technology, he won the gold medal in the automotive painting project in one fell swoop, achieving a breakthrough of zero gold medals in the WorldSkills Competition for China.

This "dark horse" does not have to whip itself, running all the way from the mountain villages of Yunnan to the world stage. Yang Jinlong received more attention and achievements. However, whether it is the applause of flowers or the high-salary invitation of famous enterprises, it has not shaken Yang Jinlong to stick to his original dream: to be a teacher and feed his alma mater. With a heart of ingenuity, continue to refine your skills.

In 2018, Yang Jinlong was elected as a deputy to the National People's Congress. He especially spoke out for the growth of skilled talents, focusing on the training of skilled talents and the working environment of front-line technicians, and practiced the "craftsman spirit" on the performance of deputies. Vocational colleges, workshops, repair shops, and car 4S shops are all good places for him to listen to his heart.

"The profession of automotive painting needs a long period of precipitation and accumulation to reach the level of high precision, which is a hard and long process." In the past three years, Yang Jinlong has submitted more than 10 proposals, such as "Suggestions on Further Strengthening the Cultivation of High-skilled Talents", "Suggestions on Further Optimizing the Growth Environment for Skilled Talents", "Suggestions on Accelerating the Implementation of the Work Related to the Interconnection of Academic Certificates and Vocational Skill Level Certificates", and "Suggestions on Establishing a National Craftsman Day to Create a New Trend of Advocating Skills". Among them, the proposal to establish a "National Craftsman Day" has been paid attention to by the relevant departments of the state and included in the solution plan.

This year, Yang Jinlong won the "National May Day Labor Medal". In the future, he still decided to base himself on the automotive painting post, delve into technology, teach and educate people, cultivate more high-skilled talents for China's automotive painting industry, and contribute more to the development of the industry.
