According to foreign media ITHome, NVIDIA is preparing to launch a GeForce MX550 discrete graphics card based on ampere architecture. The card will be the first in the series to feature only 2GB of video memory.

An undisclosed graphics card appeared on a Lenovo laptop on the Geekbench website, and its final retail name is temporarily unknown. ITHome claims this should be the upcoming GeForce MX550 entry-level graphics card, which is said to be based on ampere GA107 GPUs with 16 compute units and 16 streaming multiprocessors, each with 128 CUDA cores, with as many cores as the GeForce RTX 3050 non-Ti (2048).

The graphics card will be equipped with the Intel Core i7-1260P 12-core/16-thread CPU, which is said to be part of the Alder Lake-P (U28) series, which was purportedly launched at CES 2022. Such a system would target a cpu + GPU configuration of less than 50W, which is usually reserved for notebooks with ultra-thin designs.

The MX550 will have more than twice as many cores as the Pascal GP107 GPU-based MX450 (2048 vs. 896). This is mainly because the Ampere architecture doubled the card's FP32 cores compared to the previous generation, but that doesn't necessarily mean doubling the performance. It's only since the MX450 that NVIDIA has started using GDDR6 memory in its class, and it's unclear how fast the MX550 memory will be compared to these 1.5-year-old G6 models (GDDR6).

In terms of performance, the MX550 has a 15% improvement in performance compared to the MX450 (which uses the Core i5-11300H 35W CPU), which sets a good baseline for NVIDIA's new MX series. However, there is currently no information about the other MX500 series GPUs. Whether the MX550 uses the FULL 128-bit memory bus of the GA107, or relies more on the shorter 64-bit bus, remains to be confirmed. I am very much looking forward to the implementation of the MX550 on notebook products!
