On December 12, at the 20th anniversary of the Shenzhen International Graduate School of Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as the International Graduate School), Gao Hong, executive dean of the International Graduate School, explained the relationship between the school and the city: "We contribute to the development of the city, and also grow rapidly with the development of this innovative and dynamic city. "In 2001, the Shenzhen Graduate School of Tsinghua University was established; in 2014, Tsinghua Berkeley Shenzhen College (TBSI) was established; in 2019, on the basis of the first two, the International Graduate School was inaugurated... In the past 20 years, Tsinghua University has struggled to solve four problems in Shenzhen: the "addition" of innovative talent training, the "subtraction" of cutting-edge layout and interdisciplinary disciplines, the "multiplication" of gathering high-end resources to challenge cutting-edge technology, and the "division" of solving problems with Tsinghua's strength. The four "calculation questions" seem simple, but they challenge the vision and test the wisdom, which more clearly shows the original intention of Tsinghua University in running a deep school. In July 2004, Shenzhen higher education achieved a "breakthrough of zero" - the first locally trained doctoral student graduated from the Shenzhen Graduate School of Tsinghua University! The level of talent training in Shenzhen has since gone to a new level. In the past 20 years, Tsinghua University has sent more than 12,000 graduates to the society, and there are currently more than 4,600 graduate students, including more than 700 doctoral students. In recent years, about one-third of the graduates have stayed in Shenzhen and integrated into the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which has shown an increasing trend year by year. More and more outstanding talents have stepped out of Southern Tsinghua and become the mainstay of all walks of life. The gathering of talents depends on their own cultivation and also relies on the "siphon effect". At present, the International Graduate School has become a platform for attracting outstanding teachers from all over the world, with nearly 200 full-time teachers, including 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 1 academician of the Royal New Zealand Academy of Sciences, nearly 30 teachers have won the title of national or provincial and ministerial talents, more than 100 teachers have become various high-level talents in Shenzhen, and 8 teachers have been selected into the list of 2021 global highly cited scientists. Subtraction: Innovative talent training model interdisciplinary characteristics of the international graduate school should not only inherit the advantages of Tsinghua University, but also focus on the industrial needs of Shenzhen, so in the discipline setting, it abandons the "large and complete" layout, with interdisciplinary disciplines as the prominent feature, and does a good job of "subtraction". At present, the International Graduate School has initially built an innovative graduate training system and a frontier-oriented "61" interdisciplinary system, and has built 6 research institutes - the Institute of Biomedicine and Health Engineering, the Institute of Environment and Ecology, the Institute of Marine Engineering, the Institute of Materials, the Institute of Future Habitat and the Institute of Innovation Management. According to Gao Hong, the International Graduate School organizes scientific research resources in the mode of "interdisciplinary innovation team", establishes the operation, investment and assessment mode of "discipline leader innovation team platform project", and cultivates and promotes major innovative achievements. The Energy and Environmental Materials Innovation Team was selected as one of the first 12 innovation teams in Guangdong Province. The five disciplines of materials science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, medical and health engineering, marine engineering, data science and information technology are listed as the key construction disciplines of high-level universities in Guangdong Province. Multiplication: Focusing on cutting-edge resource fusion "intelligent core" to support the scientific and technological engine In June 2006, another record in the Shenzhen scientific research community was created by Tsinghua: the International Graduate School and the Shenzhen Orchid Plant Conservation Research Center published a paper in Nature, filling the gap in Shenzhen's publications in the world's top academic journals. In the past 20 years, teachers and students have worked hard in the frontier and technical fields of the discipline, publishing more than 10,000 high-level papers; 162 papers have entered the ranks of the top 1% of the world's influence in their subject fields; they have undertaken 19 national major projects and 13 scientific research achievements have won national awards. Located in the hinterland of Xili Lake International Science and Education City, the International Graduate School has achieved a high degree of convergence of scientific research resources, and the role of "smart core" is becoming increasingly obvious. A number of open and shared high-level innovation carriers and research platforms provide strong support for the scientific research of teachers and students: there are 5 national, 13 provincial and ministerial key laboratories and engineering laboratories, as well as a number of municipal innovation carriers represented by two Nobel Prize laboratories, and the "State Key Laboratory of Tumor Chemical Genomics" jointly built with the Shenzhen Graduate School of Peking University is the first national and local joint key laboratory in Shenzhen relying on the construction of universities. The Gem Graphene Research Center led by Nobel Laureate Professor Andre Gaim and the RISCV International Open Source Laboratory led by Turing Prize winner Professor David Patterson, as two Shenzhen Nobel Prize laboratories, rely on the construction of the institute, have become a scientific and technological innovation platform for gathering talents in the field of materials science and computer information technology. The International Graduate School and Imperial College of Technology jointly built a joint innovation center for future vaccines, and built a platform for joint translational research between the two cities in London and Shenzhen. Division: During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the International Graduate School led the construction of 8 national key R&D program projects, 6 provincial major special projects/key R&D program projects, as well as 1 national key laboratory, 5 Guangdong engineering technology centers, 1 Sino-German electric vehicle common support innovation center, 2 Shenzhen Nobel Prize scientist laboratories and a number of other municipal innovation carriers, further strengthening the "from 0 to 1" basic research and technology research. Challenges to key core technologies play an irreplaceable key role in solving a number of "card neck" problems. Famous schools and famous cities nourish each other and achieve each other. Over the past 20 years, the International Graduate School has continuously contributed to the "Tsinghua Power" in shenzhen's economic and scientific and technological development. Up to now, the International Graduate School has undertaken more than 870 scientific research projects entrusted by Shenzhen enterprises. Completed 28 technology transformation projects, more than half of the results were transformed in Shenzhen; a total of 26,000 training sessions for Shenzhen incumbents, training nearly 50,000 people of all kinds of middle and senior management personnel across the country; more than 300 national, provincial and municipal research projects were completed, and a number of urban planning preparation, major decision formulation and research commissioned by Shenzhen Municipality were undertaken. Four university-level think tanks, including the Hong Kong and Macao Research Center of Tsinghua University, have landed in Shenzhen to provide intellectual support for regional development.
